Τεράστιο άγαλμα του Σοφοκλή σε πάρκο της Νέας Υόρκης

Ένα ογκώδες χάλκινο άγαλμα του Σοφοκλή εγκαταστάθηκε στο Πάρκο Αθηνών στην Αστόρια.

Πρόκειται για το τελευταίο άγαλμα που θα προστεθεί στη συλλογή του πάρκου. Στο ίδιο πάρκο έχουν ήδη εγκατασταθεί μια προτομή του Αριστοτέλη, ένα άγαλμα του Σωκράτη και ένα της θεάς Αθηνάς.

«Η ολοκλήρωση του έργου ήταν μια μακρά διαδικασία» δήλωσε ο Γιώργος Σταματιάδης, ταμίας της Athens Square Inc., της μη κερδοσκοπικής εταιρείας της γειτονιάς που φιλοξενεί στο πάρκο διοργανώσεις διασκέδασης κατά τη διάρκεια του καλοκαιριού και πλήρωσε για την ολοκλήρωση του έργου.

Τα ελληνικά αγάλματα στο πάρκο ήταν το όραμα του Έλληνα Dennis Syntilas, ο οποίος ίδρυσε πριν από τα χρόνια τη ομάδα Athens Square και απεβίωσε τον Ιανουάριο σε ηλικία 85 ετών. «Ήθελε να έχει ένα μικρό πολιτιστικό περιβάλλον όπου οι άνθρωποι θα μπορούσαν να έρθουν και να συνομιλούν» δήλωσε ο Σταματιάδης.

«Οι άνθρωποι απλά θα συγκεντρώνονται εδώ τη νύχτα κατά τη διάρκεια του καλοκαιριού, θα ακούν λαϊκή μουσική» συμπληρώνει.

Χρειάστηκαν 4 ή 5 χρόνια για να συγκεντρώσουν περίπου 170.000 δολάρια για τοάγαλμα του Σοφοκλή, συμπεριλαμβανομένης της κατασκευής και το κόστος της ετήσιας συντήρησης, όπως το γυάλισμα. Το χάλκινο άγαλμα δημιουργήθηκε από τοπικό καλλιτέχνη Chris Vilardi, και έχει ύψος 2,3 μέτρα.

Το πρώτο έργο τέχνης ήταν ένα άγαλμα του Σωκράτη, το οποίο προστέθηκε στο πάρκο το 1993. Η ομάδα χρηματοδότησε επίσης την προσθήκη των τριών στηλών το 1996.

Ο δήμαρχος της Αθήνας δώρισε το άγαλμα της Αθηνάς στο πάρκο το 1998, ενώ η προτομή του Αριστοτέλη ήταν δώρο από την ελληνική περιοχή της Χαλκιδικής το 2008. Το πάρκο ανακαινίστηκε το περασμένο καλοκαίρι με το ποσό των 850.000 δολαρίων.

Θα υπάρξει μια επίσημη τελετή αποκαλυπτηρίων του αγάλματος του Σοφοκλή, το Σάββατο, 28 Μαρτίου, στο πλαίσιο του εορτασμού της Ελληνικής Ανεξαρτησίας στο πάρκο.

Saudi Arabia and its allies have hit Houthi rebel positions in Yemen for the second night.  This time, they've targeted the Houthi's main stronghold -the province of Saada in Northern Yemen.  There've also been air strikes on the Yemeni capital Sanaa, the central city of Taiz and the Southern port city of Aden.  Al Jazeera's Osama bin Javaid reports.

Helicopters airlifted residents to safety after severe floods devastated the city of Copiapo in Atacama Desert region of Chile, on Thursday. Tunisian police have released video footage showing the moment they stormed a museum where jihadists were shooting tourists and killed two attackers.
In the video, police from the BAT - special anti-terrorist forces - are shown fanning through the Bardo Museum, where 20 tourists and a policeman were killed last week.
At one point, they enter a room where dozens of people are cowering in a corner. At another, a police dog is filmed being sent in to track down the attackers, only to be shot dead.
None of the bodies of the dead tourists are shown, though one woman spattered with blood is filmed being carried on to a stretcher, and others are seen hobbling or being escorted away.
At the end of the film, the two dead jihadists are shown. A hand grenade lies beside one of them.

Syria War 2015 - Syrian Rebels Capture Roman Amphitheater In Ancient Town Of Bosra After Heavy Fighting With Hezbollah. Syrian rebels have captured the Roman Amphitheater in the ancient town of Bosra after heavy fighting with Hezbollah and the Syrian army as the video shows. The battle occured in Daraa, southern Syria where rebels have a strong presence. The Amphitheater was captured without any damage caused to it but other parts of the ancient town where destroyed due to heavy fighting between the conflict parties.

Bosra, once the capital of the Roman province of Arabia, was an important stopover on the ancient caravan route to Mecca. A magnificent 2nd-century Roman theatre, early Christian ruins and several mosques are found within its great walls.
