ISIS terrorist attacks thwarted in Moscow, 4 arrested – FSB

The Federal Security Service (FSB) has foiled a series of terrorist attacks in Moscow by a group of foreign fighters, who were directed by an Islamic State-affiliate based in Turkey, the Russian agency reported.

The group “included several Tajikistan nationals and a Moldovan national and plotted a series of high-profile terrorist attacks in Moscow involving the detonation of powerful improvised explosive devices,” the FSB report released on Thursday said.

The FSB said it detained four members of the group on Thursday, seizing automatic firearms, explosives and parts for manufacturing IEDs.

“The terrorist attacks were being plotted under a direct order by a Turkey-based affiliate of the international terrorist organization Islamic State [IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL], which is outlawed in Russia,” the report stressed.

The security service did not identify the four detained men, who were busted in several locations in Moscow and the Moscow Region, nor the suspected mastermind of the operation. It said the mastermind is on a Tajikistan wanted list.

Russian security forces have recently reported thwarting a number of terrorist plots on Russian soil organized by people with ties to IS. Russian President Vladimir Putin said the threat posed to Russian citizens by the organization, which grew in power in Iraq and Syria, is one of the key reasons why he decided to deploy the Russian military to help the Syrian government in its fight against terrorism.According to a recent report of the Russian National Antiterrorism committee, the FSB and other law enforcement agencies has prevented 42 terrorist attacks on Russian soil this year.

Lucid unveils its electric sedan called ‘Air’: 400 miles of range, 1000 hp, ‘autonomous-ready’ and ‘more than $100,000’

After announcing several deals over the past few weeks to build some credibility over the propect of bringing its first electric vehicle to production, Lucid Motors, formerly known as Atieva, unveiled its luxury sedan now called ‘Lucid Air’ in the Bay Area today. 

There are not many surprises about the vehicle’s performance and specs since the company has talked about the powertrain on several occasions in the past through its development program in the ‘Edna’ van, but now we get to see the design.

Lucid hit the mark with design. The camouflaged prototype that the company was parading around in the last few weeks looked boxy, but the final version looks quite elegant. It’s not a big sedan, but Lucid’s platform pushed everything to the edges of the car and leaving a roomy interior.

And the interior is where Lucid’s design truly shines. There’s nothing I can write that will make it justice so here’s a gallery:

To be fair, those are press pictures and the prototype unveiled to the press today had a stripped interior.

As for the specs, Lucid is talking about two battery pack options: 100 kWh and 130 kWh. As we reported earlier this week, the company claims that this is enabled through a new battery cell they developed with Samsung SDI. It will bring the range of the car to up to 400 miles.

The dual motor powertrain delivers 1,000 hp and a 0 to 60 mph acceleration in 2.5 seconds, according to the company. That’s equivalent to the current version of the Tesla Model S P100D – though Tesla CEO Elon Musk says that there’s a software update coming that will bring down the 0-60 time to 2.4 seconds.

The Lucid Air is certainly not a family car and we wouldn’t expect it to compete directly with the Tesla Model S for example – since it’s going to be a popular comparison because sedan + electric = Tesla – but it is an interesting “executive sedan”. The price reflects that since Lucid is talking about “more than $100,000” for a model with decent options.

The first ~250 cars will be fully equipped and cost around $160,000. Lucid Motors opened the first reservations for those cars today and it is asking for a pricey $25,000 deposit. Keep in mind that Tesla was asking $40,000 for ‘Signature reservations’ of the Model S and X – though the company had already delivered a product at that point.

The company claims that a less expensive version with a standard backseat is also coming. It could start around the same price of the Model S: ~$65,000.

Lucid aims to bring the vehicle to production in 2018 at its upcoming factory in Arizona announced last month. It remains to be seen if they will be able to secure the financing for the ~$700 million project, but the unveiling of the Lucid Air could encourage investor, if not, I guess they will regret the name ‘Air’.

Η νέα διαδρομή του Rally Dakar επιβεβαιώνει τη φήμη του ως τον πιο extreme αγώνα rally στον κόσμο. Με μερικά stages να είναι πάνω από 500χλμ. και έξι συνεχόμενες ημέρες σε υψόμετρο 3.000μ. πάνω από την επιφάνεια της θάλασσας, το πρόγραμμα του αγώνα θα είναι εξουθενωτικό για όσους θαρραλέους αποφασίσουν να κάνουν το ταξίδι στη Νότια Αμερική.

Stage 1: Από την Ασουνσιόν (Παραγουάη) μέχρι τη Ρεζιστένσια (Αργεντινή)

Το Rally Dakar 2017 θα εκκινήσει από την Ασουνσιόν και η Παραγουάη θα γίνει η 29η χώρα που φιλοξενεί τον διάσημο αγώνα. Είναι ένα μικρό stage με λιγότερα από 40χλμ. ενάντια στο χρόνο και είμαστε σίγουροι ότι θα δούμε μερικούς από τους riders που βρίσκονται μπροστά να προσπαθούν να χτίσουν γρήγορα διαφορά από τους αντιπάλους τους.

Stage 2: Από τη Ρεζιστένσια στο Σαν Μιγκέλ ντε Τουκουμάν

Καθώς αφήνουμε την Παραγουάη και οδεύουμε προς την Αργεντινή, οι αποστάσεις μεγαλώνουν υπερβολικά, με πάνω από 800χλμ. διαδρομής και κοντά στα 300χλμ. μέσα στο χρονομετρημένο κομμάτι του stage. Οι οδηγοί θα πρέπει να προσέξουν την πρόγνωση του καιρού καθώς μπορεί να συναντήσουν σύννεφα σκόνης ή λασποβροχή, ή ακόμα και τα δύο.

Stage 3: Από το Σαν Μιγκέλ ντε Τουκουμάν μέχρι το Χουχούι

Όσο ανεβαίνουν οι θερμοκρασίες τόσο ανεβαίνει και το υψόμετρο, καθώς το τρίτο stage του Dakar είναι αποκλειστικά offroad. Μια διαδρομή όπου οι οδηγοί θα πρέπει να διασχίσουν πάρα πολλά ποτάμια, κάτι που είναι πολύ επικίνδυνο καθώς δεν ξέρουν από πριν πόσο βαθιά μπορεί να είναι.

Stage 4: Από το Χουχούι μέχρι την Tupiza (Βολιβία)

Στη Βολιβία, το υψόμετρο φτάνει τα 3.500μ. πάνω από την επιφάνεια της θάλασσας. Υπάρχουν φυσικά και οι αμμόλοφοι που κάνουν την οδήγηση ακόμα πιο δύσκολη.

Stage 5: Από την Tupiza στο Ορούρο

Υπάρχει μεγάλη προσδοκία για αυτό το stage, το οποίο φαίνεται να τα έχει όλα. Δεν έχουμε ένα, αλλά δύο sections με αμμόλοφους και άγριο τερέν που καλύπτει 1.000χλμ. Και όλα αυτά σε απίστευτο υψόμετρο.

Stage 6: Από το Ορούρο στη Λα Παζ

Μόλις τελειώσει μια εξουθενωτική ημέρα, αμέσως ξεκινάει η επόμενη στο Dakar. Η πρώτη εβδομάδα του αγώνα ολοκληρώνεται με άλλο ένα επικό stage στη Βολιβία, το οποίο περνάει μέσα από τα πανέμορφα τοπία γύρω από τη λίμνη Τιτικάκα. Δεν υπάρχει χρόνος όμως για να θαυμάσεις τη θέα αν θες να φτάσεις στη Λα Παζ πριν βραδιάσει.

Stage 7: Από τη Λα Παζ στην Ουγιούνι

Μετά από την rest day στη Λα Παζ, οι οδηγοί θα ξεκινήσουν το πρώτο μέρος του marathon stage. Η προστασία των μηχανημάτων τους είναι κλειδί, γιατί δεν θα έχουν καθόλου βοήθεια από μηχανικούς και θα πρέπει να κάνουν μόνοι τους όλες τις επισκευές.

Stage 8: Από την Ουγιούνι στη Σάλτα (Αργεντινή)

Τα διαβατήρια θα βγουν για τελευταία φορά καθώς οι οδηγοί θα αφήσουν πίσω τους τη Βολιβία και θα ξαναμπούν στην Αργεντινή. Η Σάλτα μας έχει χαρίσει μερικές από τις πιο δραματικές στιγμές στο rally και μπορεί να έχουμε αρκετές εκπλήξεις μέσα στα φαράγγια της περιοχής.

Stage 9: Από τη Σάλτα στο Chilecito

Οι διοργανωτές του αγώνα έχουν ήδη βαφτίσει αυτό το stage, “The Super Belén” μιας και το χρονομετρημένο stage φτάνει τα 400χλμ. Είναι μια τεράστια διαδρομή με πολλές τεχνικές προκλήσεις στην πλοήγηση σε ένα αποκλειστικά offroad περιβάλλον. Είναι μια σκληρή υπενθύμιση για τους οδηγούς ότι έχουν να καλύψουν ακόμα το 1/3 του rally μετά από αυτό το stage.

Stage 10: Από το Chilecito στο Σαν Χουάν

Όσοι οδηγοί περιμένουν πώς και πώς να επιτεθούν θα πρέπει να θυμηθούν ότι αν κάνουν λάθη σε αυτό το stage θα χάσουν πάρα πολύ χρόνο. Οι οδηγοί θα είναι πολύ κουρασμένοι αλλά θα πρέπει να παραμείνουν σε εγρήγορση, τόσο στον τομέα της πλοήγησης όσο και στα μηχανικά προβλήματα που μπορεί να τους χαλάσουν χιλιάδες χιλιόμετρα καλής δουλειάς που έχουν κάνει μέχρι αυτό το σημείο.

Stage 11: Από το Σαν Χουάν στο Rio Cuarto

Τα πράγματα αποκτούν πολύ γρήγορα μεγάλο ενδιαφέρον σε αυτό το stage, καθώς οι αμμόλοφοι του Σαν Χουάν ξεκινούν στα πρώτα 50χλμ. του χρονομετρημένου special section. Μετά έχουμε αλλαγή σκηνικού καθώς μπαίνουμε στην γρήγορη και ολισθηρή διαδρομή του WRC της Αργεντινής.

Stage 12: Από το Rio Cuarto στο Μπουένος Άιρες

Όπως και στο πρώτο stage, η τελευταία ημέρα αγώνα για το Dakar 2017 θα είναι σύντομη και γλυκιά. Όποιος οδηγός πάντως περάσει τη γραμμή του τερματισμού, θα είναι ήρωας στα μάτια μας. Πλήθος κόσμου θα περιμένει στο Μπουένος Άιρες, το οποίο θα υποδεχτεί τους offroaders που κατάφεραν να ξεπεράσουν όλες τις δυσκολίες και τις προκλήσεις του σκληρότερου αγώνα στον κόσμο.
