Putin says Russia 'ready and willing' to restore full relations with the US

Δημοσιεύτηκε στις 9 Νοε 2016
Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated US President-elect Donald Trump and expressed hope that "fully-fledged relations" could be restore with the United States, while speaking from Moscow on Wednesday.

Vladimir Putin, Russian President (Russian): "I would like to congratulate the American people on the end of the electoral cycle and Donald Trump on his victory in this election. We've heard his electoral slogans while he was a presidential candidate which have focused on resuming and restoring relations between Russia and the United States. We do understand that this way won't be an easy task taking into account the current degraded state of relations between Russia and the US. And as I have repeatedly said it's not our fault that Russian-American relations are in such a poor state. However, Russia is ready and willing to restore fully-fledged relations with the United States. I want to repeat that we understand that it won't be an easy way ahead, but we are ready to play our part in it and do everything in order to return Russian-American relations to a sustainable path of development. Both the Russian and American peoples could benefit and it could positively affect the general climate of world affairs taking into account the special responsibility of Russia and the US in sustaining global stability and security."

Russian President Vladimir Putin is due to welcome new ambassadors from 19 countries to Russia, in Moscow, on Wednesday, November 9. The traditional ceremony symbolises the official commencement of a diplomat's tour of duty in Russia.
Putin will inaugurate new ambassadors from New Zealand, Republic of Burundi, Greece, Columbia, Mali, Montenegro, Somali, Chad, Gambia, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Finland, Iceland, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cambodia, Poland, Turkmenistan and Guinea.

Satellite Imagery: The Islamic State's Mosul Defenses

Analysis

Iraqi troops and their allies are getting closer and closer to Mosul. Forces at the head of the advance, approaching the city from the east, have even crossed into the city's outskirts. Islamic State fighters in the heart of Mosul have begun to prepare for the impending battle, and based on satellite imagery obtained from our partners at AllSource Analysis, it appears as if the jihadist group has formed a formidable defensive line along the southern edge of the city's center.
The photographs above, taken Oct. 31, show that the Islamic State has cleared a wide swath of terrain to the north of Mosul airport, along the western bank of the Tigris River. Nearly all of the buildings in the airport complex and the former military base to its west have been leveled. (Though Mosul's sugar factory is still standing, its facilities seem to have already been struck by coalition airstrikes.) By destroying the buildings, the jihadists are likely trying to transform the edge of Mosul's fortified city center into a wall from which they can target approaching adversaries. The large open areas the Islamic State has cleared to the south of its positions will enable it to watch and engage advancing forces from a greater distance.
Meanwhile, the Islamic State has also erected a long line of barricades on roads leading into the city. The group has placed concrete blocks — perhaps portions of concrete walls — and other rubble in the streets to prevent vehicles from navigating them. However, the militants have opted against reducing mobility in several areas of the city for now. They have fashioned ready-made barriers that are currently lining both sides of the roads that are still open, and they could easily tip them into the streets once the battle draws near.
The air power and artillery fire that Iraqi forces can bring to bear will significantly reduce the Islamic State's chances of maintaining its hold on Mosul. Nevertheless, the jihadists' defensive measures will pose a substantial tactical challenge to the converging forces. Iraqi troops will either have to adjust their course to avoid running into the Islamic State's positions head-on, or accept the risks of crossing open terrain to reach the dug-in jihadist fighters.

Carbon nanotubes turn spinach plants into a living bomb detector

Carbon nanotubes turn spinach plants into a living bomb detector

Plant biodetectors could signal the presence of explosives

There’s something odd in the water – a slight taste of a landmine nearby. You won’t notice it, but nanotech-enhanced spinach plants certainly can.

A group of MIT engineers led by Michael Strano has converted ordinary spinach plants into biological bomb detectors.

The engineers implanted customised carbon nanotubes into the leaves of living plants to turn them into a real-time monitoring system for explosive molecules.

When the plants suck water from the ground into the leaves, the carbon nanotubes can detect the presence of any nitroaromatics – chemical compounds often found in explosives such as landmines. When the researchers shine a laser on the nanotubes, they emit a fluorescent signal if they pick up nitroaromatics. This signal can be detected by an infrared camera up to a metre away.

The research, published in Nature Materials, has yet to be tested for real, but eventually it could be possible to sow seeds across a site suspected of containing landmines and use the plant detection system to locate them.

This isn’t the first time that plants have been tweaked using nanotechnology. Strano’s research group has used similar techniques to improve plants’ photosynthesis ability and to develop detectors for hydrogen peroxide, TNT, and the nerve gas sarin.

Plants are well suited to spotting different chemical compounds in ground water as they naturally develop extensive root networks, enabling them to sample a large area of soil. The latest research is “pushing the interaction of nanoparticles with biological systems,” says Matthew Baker from the University of Strathclyde.

He says one next possible step will be dispense with the infrared sensor. Other research has genetically modified plants so that they stop producing chlorophyll and change colour when exposed to certain substances in the ground, so the detectors need no extra technology.

ΔΕΛΤΑ ΝΙΓΗΡΑ Προϋπόθεση για την κατάπαυση του πυρός (VIDEO)

OCT 31, 2016

In a new video obtained by SaharaReporters, members of the Bakassi Strike Force explained their motives and the conditions under which they would lay down their arms.

The Niger Delta militant group stated that its opposition to the Nigerian federal government is rooted in the latter’s failure to include the people of Bakassi in the Greentree Agreement of 2006, which ceded the region to Cameroon. One militant told our correspondent that Bakassi was “handed over to Cameroon without recourse to human rights,” which has brought “untold hardships” on the people of the community.

Disputes over the oil-region region date back to the colonial era and nearly culminated in a war between Nigeria and Cameroon in 1981.

The militants explained that they would lay down their arms if the people of Bakassi are included in an agreement over the fate of the region. If the Nigerian government cannot reclaim Bakassi, the group said, a "resettlement should be instituted" that would fairly compensate the people of Bakassi.

The international community, the group stated, should monitor the new agreement to ensure that the Bakassi people play a large role in its negotiation. Participation in such negotiations and agreements falls under the rights of all peoples to self-determination, the source explained.

The group emphasized that it does not sabotage Nigerian national assets, as other groups do, and that it simply wants justice for its people.

The Bakassi Strike Force also stated that the Nigerian government should assist in cleaning up oil pollution that has affected the whole region.
