Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated US President-elect Donald Trump and expressed hope that "fully-fledged relations" could be restore with the United States, while speaking from Moscow on Wednesday.
Vladimir Putin, Russian President (Russian): "I would like to congratulate the American people on the end of the electoral cycle and Donald Trump on his victory in this election. We've heard his electoral slogans while he was a presidential candidate which have focused on resuming and restoring relations between Russia and the United States. We do understand that this way won't be an easy task taking into account the current degraded state of relations between Russia and the US. And as I have repeatedly said it's not our fault that Russian-American relations are in such a poor state. However, Russia is ready and willing to restore fully-fledged relations with the United States. I want to repeat that we understand that it won't be an easy way ahead, but we are ready to play our part in it and do everything in order to return Russian-American relations to a sustainable path of development. Both the Russian and American peoples could benefit and it could positively affect the general climate of world affairs taking into account the special responsibility of Russia and the US in sustaining global stability and security."
