A unique, 90-percent intact steppe mammoth skeleton dating back 126,000 years has been discovered in northern Russia. The find could mean the species existed for much longer than previously thought.
It is the first steppe mammoth to be found in Yakutia in Northern Russia. It’s in better condition than the five other skeletons discovered in other parts of Russia.
Although scientists estimated the animal’s height as a little below average at just over 3 meters, the male specimen had giant tusks - each 2.5 meters long and weighing 75 kilos.
“The skeleton was discovered in an anatomical position and was extracted mostly intact. Even the smaller bones of the feet were complete. It lacked the right hind leg. Evidently it had been torn off during the mammoth’s lifetime,” says Yevgeny Mashchenko, senior research scientist at the Paleontological Institute in Moscow.

Locals found the remains of the animal on the bank of the river Suola in the Sakha Republic, Russia’s coldest region.
As the bank thaws it erodes and yields a mix of sand and ice, where many specimens have been discovered over the years. This find is unique, however.
It is believed that steppe mammoths lived in Siberia during the Pleistocene era some 600,000-370,000 years ago and were ancestors of the more commonly found woolly mammoths. But this skeleton appears much newer at about 126,000 years old.

“It is thought that during the mid-Pleistocene period, the climate in Yakutia was relatively warm. However this skeleton was buried during permafrost. Apart from that, we discovered traces of animals near the skeleton that were previously thought to have lived in the area much later. How does that go together with a warm climate?” asks Albert Protopopov from the Sakha Academy of Science.
“Next year we plan to start larger scale research in the area,” he said.
In comparison to the more common woolly mammoth, the steppe mammoth was taller and the length of its body shorter. On average they were 4 meters tall and weighed up to 10 tons.

Earlier this year scientists found the remains of a steppe mammoth in the Perm region. They have only managed to pull out 50 bones so far due to difficult conditions on the site. The team hopes to resume the dig next summer.
Other cases of steppe mammoth skeletons discovered in good condition include one in Serbia, where a female specimen was found with 90 percent of its bones, and in England, where an 85-percent complete male mammoth skeleton was found.

ΚΑΛΙΦΟΡΝΙΑ ΩΡΑ ΜΗΔΕΝ!

Six people are dead and rescue crews are searching for several others after two cars got caught in a flash flood Monday evening, according to the Colorado City Fire officials. Three people have been rescued but seven individuals are still unaccounted for. The victims are from the Colorado City and Hildale area and range from mothers to small children, said Kevin Barlow, Colorado City assistant fire chief. At about 5:40 p.m., Barlow said, a tremendous thunder cell came through the area while two cars were on Canyon Street. The vehicles were washed down stream from Canyon Street to the flood channel. Barlow said several agencies are on scene assisting in trying to locate the missing individuals, including a swift water rescue team. Flash flooding in the Hildale area has resulted in overturned cars and flood damage along State Route 59, according to the National Weather Service Monday. The weather service had a flash flood warning in effect for the Hildale area and Zion National Park until 8:15 p.m. The north fork of the Virgin River in Zion has risen from 42 cubic feet per second to 2,628 CFS in an hour. The east fork of the river near the town of Springdale has risen from 123 CFS to 3,692 CFS. FOX 13 News viewer, Tabitha Corry, submitted photos of flooding on U.S. Highway 89. Corry wrote in an email that around 5 p.m. there were cars off to the side of road with water up to the doors. She added several personnel from Hurricane responded to flash flooding crossing Highway 89 in numerous places. More information on this story will be provided as it becomes available. The video below was submitted by Guy Timpson. It shows flood waters pushing a car down the road into a bridge.

Theseus Mosaic,4th century AD, Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna, Austria

The “Theseus Mosaic” is among the most beautiful mosaics ever found in Austria. It portrays scenes from the Theseus legend, set in an ornamental framework. According to the Greek myth, Ariadne, the daughter of the Cretan king Minos, fell in love with the young Theseus when he arrived from Athens to slay the Minotaur, a terrifying monster with a bull’s head on a human body, and free the Athenians from paying tribute to the Minotaur in the form of human sacrifice. With the aid of the king’s daughter, the hero succeeded in killing the beast in the Cretan Labyrinth and safely returned from the winding paths of the maze. Since Theseus had promised to marry Ariadne once he had accomplished his task, they fled to his ship and sailed off to Athens. At the gods’ behest, however, the hero deserted his beloved on the island of Naxos, where Dionysus, the god of wine, found the abandoned and mourning Ariadne and made her his wife. The large central picture of the “Theseus Mosaic” shows the killing of the Minotaur by the Athenian hero. With its regular winding paths, the Cretan Labyrinth occupies most of the mosaic like a giant ornament. Theseus safely makes his way out of the maze with the help of the red thread Ariadne has given him, as the picture on the left illustrates. In the upper picture, the hero boards the ship with Ariadne in order to return to Athens. Theseus, however, had forgotten to replace the black sails with white ones to signal his success. Sighting the ship from afar and thinking mistakenly that Theseus’s expedition had failed, his father, Aegeus, threw himself into the sea. The Aegean Sea, according to legend, was so named as a result of this event. SEPT 11TH GEOMAGNETIC STORM

SEPT 11TH GEOMAGNETIC STORM: During the early hours of Sept. 11th, a high-speed solar wind stream hit Earth's magnetic field. The impact sparked a strong (Kp=7) geomagnetic storm and Northern Lights in the USA as far south asWisconsin and Washington State. In Alaska, "the entire sky was moving like sea waves in colors of green and purple," reports aurora tour guide Marketa Murray, who took this picture outside Fairbanks:
"This was the most beautiful night in a long time," she says. "Our guests were crying and couldn't catch their breath."

ΑΝΑΚΑΛΥΨΑΝ ΠΑΓΟ ΣΤΟΝ ΑΡΗ(PHOTO)Mars south pole

Mars south pole and beyond | ESA Mars Express
September 10, 2015: An unusual observation by Mars Express shows a sweeping view over the planet’s south polar ice cap and across its ancient, cratered highlands. The image was taken by the high-resolution stereo camera on ESA’s Mars Express on February 25, 2015.

During normal scientific imaging, the camera typically takes images pointing straight down towards the surface, from around the closest point to the planet along the spacecraft’s elliptical orbit at an altitude of about 300 km.

But in this unusual observation, known as a ‘broom calibration’ image, Mars Express turned such that its camera panned over the surface far above the planet, close to its furthest point along its orbit, in this case at around 9900 km.

Importantly, as well as affording an unusual wide view, this allows the camera to record a range of features at the same illumination conditions, allowing essential calibration of the camera’s sensors.

Towards the bottom of the image is the south polar ice cap, comprising frozen water and carbon dioxide ice. This feature changes in size and shape with the seasons; the main image presented here was captured during the south polar summer, but during winter the ice extends into the smooth regions that can be seen surrounding it.

The mid-section of the image corresponds to the planet’s ancient southern highlands—it is covered by a high density of impact craters of varying size and states of erosion, with many craters overlapping.

Numerous patterns of dark, dusty dune deposits are also visible, swept up by wind and accumulating in impact craters and troughs.

Towards the top left of the image a portion of the giant Hellas basin can be seen. This feature spans more than 2200 km across and plunges some 8 km below the surface.

Two prominent channels—Dao Vallis and Niger Vallis—can be seen breaching the basin rim, made out as thin, dark wiggly lines in the color image.

Hazy patches seen in the upper part of the image are attributed to clouds, while a thin, delicate layer of atmosphere follows the curvature of the planet at the horizon.
