One gang 'ambushed the other' at recruitment event hosted by Twin Peaks Bar and Grill in Waco, Texas on Sunday afternoon and witnesses said the confrontation looked like a setup
The Waco Police Department said that 192 people had been arrested and will face organized crime charges
It started as a physical fight and escalated to involve chains, knives and guns
Diners and employees scrambled for shelter in the freezer as more than 100 rounds were fired
8 bikers died at the scene and a 9th in hospital, another 18 bikers were hospitalized, no civilians were injured
Police were monitoring the meeting outside but said owners refused to cooperate with them until shooting started
Twin Peaks insists they had 'positive communication with the police' but the police said that was nonsense

The bloody confrontation between at least five biker gangs that left nine members dead and 18 others seriously injured at a Waco, Texas restaurant was planned by at least one of the gangs, it has emerged.

What started as a physical fight in the bathroom at the Twin Peaks Bar and Grill around 12.15pm spilled out into the bar and rapidly escalated to involve chains, clubs, knives and gunfire on a quiet strip. Employees and diners, including young children, scrambled and many took shelter in the freezer as hundreds of gang members ran rampage around the booths, according to KXXV.

In the parking lot, a SWAT team shot dead at least one biker and surrounded the rest. When the shooting ended, bodies were scattered across the tarmac and cars were riddled with bullet holes. On Monday, police said 192 people had been arrested on organized crime charges.

'In 34 years of law enforcement, this is the worst crime scene, the most violent crime scene that I have been involved in,' Waco police Sgt W Patrick Swanton said at a Sunday press conference. 'There were dead everywhere, blood everywhere.'

On Monday, Swanton told KXAN that the 192 arrested bikers could face capital murder charges.

'Threats have been made to kill our uniformed officers,' he said, adding that local, state and federal officers are prepared if they decide to act on those threats.

The recruitment event was hosted by the restaurant but despite police fears of conflict, management wouldn't let officers in

On Sunday, witnesses described the scene in the quiet commercial shopping strip as a war zone.

'There were maybe 30 guns being fired in the parking lot, maybe 100 rounds,' diner Michelle Logan, 37, told the Waco Tribune. 'They just opened fire. There’s a lot of people in the hospital, a lot of people shot.'

She added that she did not get the impression that the incident was a random confrontation, telling the publication: 'It was a setup.'

Authorities said it appears one gang set up the other after arranging a meeting. Multiple police sources told the Waco Tribune it was a fight between the Cossacks and the Bandidos. Based on their leathers, it appears the Scimitars, Los Pirados, the Veterans, and the Leathernecks were also involved.

Sgt Swanton said the recruitment event was hosted by the restaurant, but despite police fears of a conflict, management refused to let officers in to monitor the situation.

'We knew there was going to be trouble at this biker event,' he said. 'We have attempted to work with the local management of Twin Peaks to no avail. They have continued to allow these bikers to gather here. What happened here could have been avoided.

'The individuals at Twin Peaks knew this event was occurring and allowed it to happen...

'I can't repeat enough how bad this could have been had it not been for Waco SWAT officers and the Department of Public Safety.'

A WHO'S WHO OF THE TEXAN MOTORCYCLE CLUBS: WHICH GANGS WERE INVOLVED IN THE SHOOT-OUT?

The Bandidos Motorcycle Club was labeled a 'growing criminal threat' by the FBI. The group was named in an FBI report as one of the country's four most dangerous outlaw gangs by the FBI - alongside the Pagans, Hells Angels, and Outlaws.

The group was formed in 1966 by Vietnam war veteran Donald Chambers in San Leon, Texas. It has since grown to build factions across the world, as far as Germany, Norway and Australia. Its Norwegian branch was one half of the Great Nordic Biker War between 1994 and 1997, warring with Hell's Angels. At its climax, a missile was fired at a prison holding a Bandidos member.

In the U.S., members have been convicted of smuggling drugs across the Mexican border - an area they are said to specialize in. According to the FBI, Bandidos are major players in the marijuana, cocaine and methamphetamine markets.

The Cossacks Motorcycle Club is based 200 miles away in Callahan County, Texas. It was formed in 1969, with the motto 'we take care of our own' and using the colors black and gold. The club is much smaller than the Bandidos but like the Bandidos, the Cossacks have chapters overseas. The largest chapters outside the U.S. can be found in Australia.

In 2013, Bandidos head Jack Lewis was charged with stabbing two Cossacks outside a restaurant in Abilene, near Callahan County.

The Cossacks are challenging the Bandidos' dominance in Texas by looking to form alliances with other gangs, such as the Hell's Angels, former undercover agent Steve Cook told Vox.

Other clubs were reportedly seen at the fight in Waco but it is not yet clear if they were involved in the shooting. They include:

The Scimitars Motorcycle Club is a smaller group based in Texas and aligned with the Cossacks; they have previously supported them in their battle against the Bandidos. Their jacket patch is a red-eyed skull on two crossed scimitars, or sabers.

Photos on Facebook pages belonging to members of the Cossacks in Texas show the two clubs pictured together. Last year, the gangs even volunteered to build a park together in Odessa, Texas, according to the Odessa American.

The Leathernecks Motorcycle Club is made up of current or former members of the Marine Corps or Fleet Marine Force Corps and the group has chapters across the country. It claims its members include those who have worked in federal, state and local law enforcement.

'The Leathernecks Motorcycle Club is NOT an Outlaw Club,' it explains on its website, 'but a family orientated Club that brings together those that have TWO very special interests in life. The love for the Corps and the love for getting our face in the wind with our motorcycles beneath us.'

Los Pirados Motorcycle Club is another small group also based in the Waco area. A recent report on a website calling itself the 'Texas Motorcycle Rights Association' referred to the group as 'a new Mom & Pop riding group'. Facebook groups show the club has also recently been involved in fund-raising benefits for children in need of surgery.

Eight died in the parking lot and a ninth at a local hospital. A number of the 18 hospitalized are in critical condition, police said. McLennan County Sheriff Parnell McNamara says the nine dead were members of the Bandidos or Cossacks gangs.

Jay Patel, Twin Peaks spokesman, said in a statement that the diner has 'ongoing and positive communications with the police', adding: 'We are horrified by the criminal, violent acts that occurred outside of our Waco restaurant today.

'We share in the community's trauma. Our priority is to provide a safe and enjoyable environment for our customers and employees, and we consider the police our partners in doing so.

'Our management team has had ongoing and positive communications with the police and we will continue to work with them as we all want to keep violent crime out of our businesses and community. We will continue to cooperate with the police as they investigate this terrible crime.'

Authorities said that the restaurant's claim that there had been 'positive communications with the police' was 'nonsense'.

By late Sunday afternoon the two groups of gunmen were sat unceremoniously on the tarmac at opposite ends of the parking lot surrounded by armed police.

However the scene was still being described as 'active but under control' at around 5pm as deputies warned individuals were still arriving with weapons.

Swanton said: ‘We are prepared to deal with those individuals if they come to Waco. We are not horse playing. If we have the opportunity to put those individuals in jail, we will arrest them and keep them there.’

Some took to Twitter to suggest that the way the bikers found at the scene were treated is evidence that US authorities are racist

More than 100 weapons - including knives, brass knuckles and clubs - were recovered from the scene, police said.

Under a Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission mandate, the restaurant must now remain closed for the next seven days as the investigation continues.

The Bandidos Motorcycle Club was named by Texan authorities as one of the four most influential gangs in the state alongside the Pagans, Hells Angels, and Outlaws. Members have been convicted of smuggling drugs across the U.S.-Mexican border - an area they are said to specialize in.

The outbreak comes just weeks after McLennan County District Attorney Abel Reyna told KWTX that law enforcement was aware of simmering conflicts between gangs that gathered at the restaurant.

A SWAT team has staked out the eatery on multiple occasions in recent months, most recently a week and a half ago.

Following the shoot-out, some took to Twitter to express surprise that the National Guard wasn't called out, as it was following recent unrest in Baltimore and Ferguson.

There were accusations on the social media site that the fact that many of those linked to the violence - all white men - were allowed to sit by the road and use their phones without being handcuffed is evidence that the US authorities are inherently racist.

Deray Mckesson tweeted: 'If you've never understood the intersection of media bias/race and policing re: whiteness, watch the #TwinPeaksShooting unfold.'

Twin Peaks is a national sports bar and so-called 'breastaurant' chain, akin to a Hooters. The Waco location opened last year in the quiet commercial strip and neighbors Don Carlos, a family eatery.

Dubbed 'the ultimate man cave', Twin Peaks has 55 flat-screen TVs and 24 beers on tap. Waitresses wear revealing red plaid shirts or bikini tops and khaki shorts. The slogan is, 'Eats. Drinks. Scenic Views'.

The managers host a 'Bike Night' every Thursday. Other special events include a beauty contest called Miss Twin Peaks. The bikini-clad winner stands on a table to receive her sash and bouquet.

Stop what you're doing and watch these guys fly jetpacks over Dubai

We're not living in the world of the Jetsons yet, but flight by jetpack is very real ... if you're Yves Rossy and Vince Reffet.

The two Jetmen are featured in the video below, soaring over desert sands and flirting dangerously close to the spire-like structures of Dubai, not to mention coming hair-raisingly close to one another.

"I am not playing with death," Rossy muses. "I am playing with life."

Their flights are filmed in stunning 4K, almost unreal in its clarity and beauty. Take 11 minutes out of your day to watch the Jetmen defy gravity. You won't regret it.

You might not know Yves Rossy by name, but there's a decent chance you've seen him before. He's one of the only people in the world with a working jetpack — and he's reallygood at flying it. We've seen him fly next to a B17 bomber, circle Mount Fuji, and soarover the Grand Canyon. But the man with the jetpack just released his most hair-raising video yet.

The video is proportionally scaled in its grandeur — ripe with more than 11 minutes of beautiful HD footage shot from a chase plane and the GoPros attached to Rossy and his "jetman protégé" Vince Reffet.

The jet-powered fun starts innocently enough over the desert where the two twist, dive, and climb through a sunset-filled sky. The jetpacks, by the way, let Rossy and Reffet go more than 120 miles per hour. The result is a particularly dizzying action that makes that"balloon boy" video look stable.

But the intensity ramps way up halfway through the video as the duo fly through the skies of Dubai. We see them perform heart-stopping maneuvers over the city's famous Palm Islands and fly in formations so close it would make the Blue Angels sweat. And then comes the ultimate moment — Rossy and Reffet buzz the Burj Khalifa with a pass so close it's legitimately hard to watch.

SERIOUSLY, STOP READING THIS AND WATCH ALREADY

There is also a section that explains each pilot's bona fides, as well as some dreamy footage with an even dreamier voiceover about how flying in three dimensions inspires Rossy to... I don't honestly know. All I do know is those scenes make for great moments to catch your breath.

Let's be clear — if you haven't clicked the play button by now, you've made a mistake. Seriously. This video is probably the closest you'll ever get to flying your own jetpack, so watch it now. Just make sure you go with the full screen option and — if you want to feel like you're riding right along with Rossy and Reffet — switch the video to 4K. The resulting noise from your computer will make you feel like you're right there with them.

Nigerian Restaurant Shut Down for Serving Human Flesh [Updated]

Sad and horrifying and gross and true.

A hotel restaurant in Anambra, Nigeria has been shuttered by authorities for serving human flesh. According to the BBC, suspicious residents told police of rumors that the restaurant was cooking human meat for customers. Police then raided the restaurant, where they discovered fresh human heads that were still bleeding. The blood was in the process of being drained into a plastic bag.

In addition to the illegal meat, authorities discovered automatic weapons, grenades, and cell phones. Ten people were arrested in conjunction with the crimes. One resident said, "Every time I went to the market, I observed strange activities going on in the hotel. People who were never cleanly dressed and who looked a bit strange made their way in and out of the hotel, making me very suspicious of their activities. I am not surprised at the shocking revelation."

A priest who ate at the restaurant was alarmed when presented with a bill of 700 Naira, or roughly $3.50 (Tens of millions of people in Nigeria subsist on less than $1 a day). "The attendant noticed my reaction and told me it was the small piece of meat I had eaten that made the bill scale that high," he said. "I did not know I had been served with human meat, and that it was that expensive."

Last year, Australian chef Marcus Volke murdered and cooked his girlfriend before killing himself. In Brazil, also last year, a man and two women were arrested for murdering potential nanny candidates and then cooking their flesh into empanadas.

Egypt mummy height

ZURICH, SWITZERLAND—Frank Rühli, director of the Institute of Evolutionary Medicine at the University of Zurich, and his colleagues used body height, which is highly hereditable, to look for possible, non-invasive evidence of incest among 259 Egyptian mummies. Historical sources record the marriages of brothers and sisters, which were believed to preserve the sacred bloodlines of pharaohs descended from the gods. Pharaohs who were married to their sisters, but whose parents were not siblings, were not considered in the study. The team found that the body heights of royals varied less than the body heights of commoners. “Pharaohs varied less in height than men of the common population. This is one indicator of inbreeding,” Rühli told Discovery News. The study showed that pharaohs, overall, were taller than non-royal males from the same time period. Ramses II was the tallest of the pharaohs under investigation. There was little difference in the height of queens and non-royal women, however. The pattern could also reflect the living environment of the wealthy royals. “Average height and height variation reflect very nicely the quality of the environment. So, the very good environment of the royal men might be another reason why their height variation is reduced compared with commoners,” commented Barry Bogin of Loughborough University. He has studied height variation among children from very wealthy families and very poor families. For another recent mummy study, see "Heart Attack of the Mummies."

Demetrious-Roman-Mummy
(Brooklyn Museum, Charles Edwin Wilbour Fund, 11.600)
The 1st-century A.D. mummy of Demetrios, now at the Brooklyn Museum, was excavated from the Roman cemetery in Hawara, Egypt, in 1911. CT scans revealed that he, like a surprising number of other mummies from around the world, had signs of atherosclerosis.Ötzi the Iceman hardly seems the type to have been prone to heart disease. He died violently around 3300 B.C., aged approximately 40 or 50, and his mummified body was found high in the Italian Alps in 1991. He led a vigorous life, ate a balanced diet, and had no access to tobacco. But when researchers put his remains in a CT scanner, they found calcium deposits in a number of his arteries, indicating the beginnings of atherosclerosis, which commonly leads to heart disease. “By the time Ötzi was 80, he would have had a very good chance of having a heart attack or a stroke,” says Gregory Thomas, a cardiologist at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center in California.

Recently, a multidisciplinary team of researchers, co-led by Thomas, examined CT scans of mummies from all over the world—from ancient Egyptians to pre-Columbian Peruvians to nineteenth-century Aleutian Islanders—and found widespread incidence of calcified arteries. They published their results in a series of papers in the journal Global Heart. One study, comparing scans of 76 ancient Egyptian mummies and 178 present-day Egyptians, found similar rates and severity of calcification after adjusting for age. These results are forcing experts to reconsider the long-held assumption that atherosclerosis is caused by uniquely modern habits: lack of physical activity, an unhealthy diet, and smoking. “We don’t know as much about the risk factors for atherosclerosis as we used to think we did,” says Randall Thompson, a cardiologist at Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute in Kansas City, who worked on several of the studies. “There may be other risk factors that have a bigger role than we appreciate.”

Ötzi the Iceman undergoing sampling for genetic testingÖtzi was saddled with a number of genetic factors that predisposed him to heart disease. According to a recent analysis of his genome, two anomalies in chromosomal region 9p21 nearly doubled his risk for coronary heart disease. “We didn’t expect that these genetic modifications would already have been present more than 5,000 years ago,” says Albert Zink, head of the Institute for Mummies and the Iceman in Italy, adding that further studies will investigate whether mummies from other cultures had similar predispositions.

In addition to genetic factors, the researchers are now considering aspects of premodern living that might have contributed to the findings. For example, Aleutian Islanders, hunter-gatherers who consumed a heart-healthy marine-based diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids, lived in subterranean homes filled with smoke from indoor fires. Three of five mummies scanned had atherosclerosis, and one woman who died around age 50 had coronary artery calcification as severe as that seen in coronary bypass patients, says Thompson. Chronic exposure to cooking-fire smoke may have been a factor.

(Courtesy M. Linda Sutherland MD)
Arterial calcification in Princess Ahmose-Meryet-Amon, a 17th Dynasty mummy from EgyptChronic infection and inflammation, which were far more common before modern antibiotics and standards of hygiene, probably played a role as well. Inflammation is known to contribute to plaque buildup in arteries, says Thomas, and people with chronic inflammatory conditions such as lupus commonly develop atherosclerosis early in life. Because infection was a leading killer of humans until very recently, people with strong immune systems—and therefore a strong inflammatory response—likely had a better chance at survival. But that same robust response, as it continues into adulthood, can contribute to clogged arteries.

The finding of atherosclerosis in mummies from such a wide range of cultures and time periods makes it clear that the disease is not just a modern plague, but a hallmark of humanity. “No matter how much exercise we do, what food we eat, whether we take our medications,” says Thomas, “we are still at risk for atherosclerosis.”
