Rising to the Surface of Undersea Systems Manufacturing

How do you build a product that can survive thousands of hours in salt water, needs no human at the controls and can handle thousands of pounds of pressure in the deep ocean?
For Lockheed Martin’s Mission Systems and Training (MST) team in Palm Beach, Florida, it’s a task they’re asked to do every day.
The facility designs, manufactures, integrates, and tests manned and unmanned undersea systems, such as the Remote Minehunting System (RMS), Marlin and the Dry Combat Submersible (DCS), for military and commercial customers around the globe.

Situated on Florida’s intercostal waterway, with easy access to deep ocean water just off the coast, Lockheed Martin’s Palm Beach site has the ability to efficiently and cost-effectively test products in mission relevant environments to bring exceptional capabilities to customers and South Florida’s manufacturing community. Customers depend on Lockheed Martin’s products to perform vital missions for the country, so safety and quality remain the primary focus at the highly regulated manufacturing facility.
The Palm Beach site includes four manufacturing and office buildings across five acres, a 500,000 gallon test tank and an on-site dive team that often accompanies products into the water for testing. 
Remote Minehunting SystemThe Remote Minehunting System (RMS) provides the primary mine reconnaissance capability in the Navy’s Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) Mine Countermeasures (MCM) Mission Package. It uses an unmanned, autonomous Remote Multi-Mission Vehicle (RMMV) that tows an advanced Variable Depth Sensor (AQS-20A) that supports minehunting sensors.
“Our customers depend on the quality of our products, so we ensure that reliability and affordability drive our manufacturing operations,” said Erika Marshall, Palm Beach Site General Manager for Lockheed Martin Mission Systems and Training.
Lockheed Martin has more than 50 years of Underwater Vehicle experience, over which time we have become an industry leader in UUV autonomy, guidance, and controls, as well as total system integration. The Palm Beach operation is vital to Lockheed Martin’s position as a market leader for Unmanned Surface Vehicles with the Remote Minehunting System Multi-mission Vehicle; a principal player in underwater autonomous vehicles with the Marlin AUV; and a principal in providing Dry Combat Systems for Special Operations command.  These are all rapidly growing markets that have fueled continuous growth in Palm Beach, Florida. 
Dry Combat SubmersibleThe Dry Combat Submersible houses up eight individuals and keeps them dryer on critical underwater missions.
Lockheed Martin’s Palm Beach operations earned South Florida Manufacturers Association’s (SFMA) 2015 Large Business “Manufacturer of the Year” award. Florida Governor Rick Scott and Lieutenant Governor Carlos Lopez-Cantera visited and toured the site to recognize the award and honor employees and veterans. 
“The South Florida Manufacturers Association award recognizes our team’s commitment to quality and customer satisfaction,” said Erika Marshall. “We pride ourselves on the dedication our employees show in utilizing innovative technologies to solve challenging problems, and we’re honored to receive this recognition.” 
Lockheed Martin’s Palm Beach site continues to improve upon a legacy and reputation of operational excellence.
