ÉDouard Λεόν Cortes [1882-1969], της γαλλικής και της ισπανικής καταγωγής, γεννήθηκε στο Lagny-sur-Marne, λίγα μίλια ανατολικά του Παρισιού. Ως έφηβος, έγινε γοητευμένος με τις τέχνες και σε δεκαεπτά ξεκίνησε τις σπουδές του στην Ecole des Beaux-Arts στο Παρίσι. A more ancient Earth? | Exoplanet Gallery: Artist Illustrations December 15, 2015: The fantasy creations of the "Star Wars" universe are strikingly similar to real planets in our own Milky Way galaxy. A super Earth in deep freeze? Think ice-planet "Hoth." And that distant world with double sunsets can't help but summon thoughts of sandy "Tatooine."

No indications of life have yet been detected on any of the nearly 2,000 scientifically confirmed exoplanets, so we don't know if any of them are inhabited by Wookies or mynocks, or play host to exotic alien bar scenes (or even bacteria, for that matter).

Still, a quick spin around the real exoplanet universe offers tantalizing similarities to several Star Wars counterparts.


Planet 1: A more ancient Earth?

The most recently revealed exoplanet possessing Earth-like properties, Kepler-452b, might make a good stand-in for Coruscant -- the high-tech world seen in several Star Wars films whose surface is encased in a single, globe-spanning city. Kepler-452b belongs to a star system 1.5 billion years older than Earth's. That would give any technologically adept species more than a billion-year jump ahead of us. The denizens of Coruscant not only have an entirely engineered planetary surface, but an engineered climate as well. On Kepler-452b, conditions are growing markedly warmer as its star's energy output increases, a symptom of advanced age. If this planet (which is 1.6 times the size of Earth) were truly Earth-like, and if technological life forms were present, some climate engineering might be needed there as well.

City in the sky

Mining the atmospheres of giant gas planets is a staple of science fiction. NASA, too, has examined the question, and found that gases such as helium-3 and hydrogen could be extracted from the atmospheres of Uranus and Neptune. Gas giants of all stripes populate the real exoplanet universe; in "The Empire Strikes Back," a gas giant called Bespin is home to a "Cloud City" actively involved in atmospheric mining. The toadstool-shaped city provides apparent refuge for a fleeing Princess Leia and company—at least until Darth Vader wreaks his usual havoc.

Many of the gas giants found so far by instruments such as NASA's Kepler Space Telescope are so-called "hot Jupiters"—star-hugging behemoths far too thoroughly barbecued to be proper sites for floating cities. One recent discovery, however, shows that gas "exogiants" can orbit their stars at distances remarkably similar to those in our solar system. An international astronomical team discovered a twin of our own Jupiter, orbiting its star at about the same distance as Jupiter is from the sun. The star, HIP 11915, is about the same age and composition as our sun, raising the possibility that its entire planetary system might be similar to ours. This not-so-hot Jupiter, about 186 light-years away from Earth, was detected using the 11.8-foot (3.6-meter) telescope at La Silla Observatory in Chile.

Bespin's atmospheric layers include a band of breathable air, ideal for floating cities. In our galaxy, emerging technology allows us to read out the components of real exoplanet atmospheres—including gas giants (though so far none show signs of habitable layers). And tasting the atmospheres of smaller, rocky, potentially habitable exoplanets soon could be within reach. Astronomers using K2, the second planet-finding mission of the Kepler space telescope, recently detected three such planets orbiting a nearby white dwarf star. The starlight shining through the atmospheres of these planets could reveal their composition in future observations.



Planet 2: Turn up the heat

The planet Mustafar, scene of an epic duel between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker in "Revenge of the Sith," has a number of exoplanet counterparts. These molten, lava-covered worlds, such as Kepler-10b and Kepler-78b, are rocky planets in Earth's size range whose surfaces could well be perpetual infernos. Kepler-78b, roughly 20 percent larger than Earth, weighs in at twice Earth's mass; a comparable density means it could be composed of rock and iron. That might make it, like Mustafar, suitable for mining, although its extremely tight orbit around its sun-like star, along with scorching temperatures, provides an unlikely arena for industrial operations—or for fencing with lightsabers.

Kepler-10b isn't much more pleasant. The first rocky world discovered using the Kepler telescope, it also hugs its sun, some 20 times closer than Mercury orbits ours. A balmy day on Kepler-10b means daytime highs of more than 2,500 Fahrenheit (1,371 Celsius), even hotter than lava flowing on Earth. The surface, free of any kind of atmosphere, might be boiling with iron and silicates.

At 3,600 degrees Fahrenheit (1,982 Celsius), however, CoRoT-7b has Kepler-10b beat. This well-grilled planet, discovered in 2010 with France's CoRoT satellite, lies some 480 light-years away, and has a diameter 70 percent larger than Earth's, with nearly five times the mass. Possibly the boiled-down remnant of a Saturn-sized planet, its orbit is so tight that its star looms much larger in its sky than our sun appears to us, keeping its sun-facing surface molten.

Planet 3: Deep freeze

The planet OGLE-2005-BLG-390, nicknamed "Hoth," is a cold super-Earth that might be a failed Jupiter. Unable to grow large enough, it had to settle for a mass five times that of Earth and a surface locked in the deepest of deep freezes, with a surface temperature estimated at minus 364 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 220 Celsius). That most likely means no "Hoth"-style tauntauns to ride, or even formidably fanged abominable snowmen (aka "wampas"). Astronomers used an extraordinary planet-finding technique known as microlensing to find this world in 2005, one of the early demonstrations of this technique's ability to reveal exoplanets. In microlensing, backlight from a distant star is used to reveal planets around a star closer to us.

The planet lies toward the heart of the Milky Way, where a greater density of stars makes microlensing events more likely. The one-time event revealing the distant Hoth was captured by the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment, or OGLE, and confirmed by other instruments.

We won't have to travel 20,000 light years, however, to visit icy worlds. Saturn's smoggy moon, Titan, where the Cassini spacecraft's Huygens probe landed in 2005, is pocked with methane lakes and socked in permanently with thick, hydrocarbon haze. The freeze is so deep that water ice is no different from rock. Another Saturn moon, Enceladus, looks like a snowball but harbors a subsurface ocean much like Jupiter's moon Europa, another ice ball with a likely ocean underneath. That ocean would be warmed by tidal flexing as the little moon orbits Jupiter.


Planet 4: Sunset? Make it a double

Luke Skywalker's home planet, Tatooine, is said to possess a harsh, desert environment, swept by sandstorms as it roasts under the glare of twin suns. Real exoplanets in the thrall of two or more suns are even harsher. Kepler-16b was the Kepler telescope's first discovery of a planet in a "circumbinary" orbit—circling both stars, as opposed to just one, in a double-star system. This planet, however, is likely cold, about the size of Saturn, and gaseous, though partly composed of rock. It lies outside its two stars' "habitable zone," where liquid water could exist. And its stars are cooler than our sun, and probably render the planet lifeless. Of course, we could look on the bright side (so to speak). When the discovery was announced in 2011, Bill Borucki, the now-retired NASA principal investigator for Kepler at Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, California, said finding the new planet might actually broaden the prospects for life in our galaxy. About half of all stars belong to binary systems, so the fact that planets form around these, as well as around single stars, can only increase the odds.

A more recently announced exoplanet, Kepler-453b, is also a circumbinary and a gas giant, though its orbit within its star's habitable zone means any moons it might have could be hospitable to life. It was the tenth circumbinary planet discovered using the Kepler telescope.

Planet 5: Ocean world

Kepler-22b, analog to the Star Wars planet Kamino (birthplace of the army of clone soldiers)), is a super-Earth that could be covered in a super ocean. Watery, storm-drenched Kamino makes its appearance in "Attack of the Clones."

The jury is still out on Kepler-22b's true nature; at 2.4 times Earth's radius, it might even be gaseous. But if the ocean world idea turns out to be right, we can envision a physically plausible Kamino-like planet, with the help of scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge. An ocean world tipped on its side—a bit like our solar system's ice giant, Uranus—turns out to be comfortably habitable based on recent computer modeling. Researchers found that an exoplanet in Earth's size range, at a comparable distance from its sun and covered in water, could have an average surface temperature of about 60 degrees Fahrenheit (15.5 degrees Celsius). Because of its radical tilt, its north and south poles would be alternately bathed in sunlight and darkness, for half a year each, as the planet circled its star.

Scientists previously thought such a planet would seesaw between boiling and freezing, rendering it uninhabitable. But the MIT scientists' three-dimensional model showed that the planet, even with a relatively shallow ocean of about 160 feet (50 meters), would absorb heat during its odd polar summer and release it in winter. That would keep the overall climate mild and spring-like year round.

The shallow depth, by the way, would be ideal for Kamino-style ocean platforms, allowing construction of covered cities at the ocean surface, where armies of clones could march and drill in peace.


Fly me to the exomoon

Endor, the forested realm of the Ewoks, orbits a gas giant and was introduced in "Return of the Jedi." Detection of exomoons—that is, moons circling distant planets—is still in its infancy for scientists here on Earth. A possible exomoon was observed in 2014 via microlensing. It will remain forever unconfirmed, however, since each microlensing event can be seen only once. If the exomoon is real, it orbits a rogue planet, unattached to a star and wandering freely through space. The planet might have hung on to its moon after somehow being ejected during the early history of a forgotten planetary system. A team of Japanese, New Zealand, and American astronomers analyzed data gathered in 2011 with telescopes in New Zealand and Tasmania, and suggested the possible exomoon. They said a small star accompanied by a large planet also could have caused the same lensing effect.

More exomoons might soon be popping out from the depths of space. The Harvard-based Hunt for Exomoons with Kepler, or HEK, has begun to scour data from Kepler for signs of them. In early 2015, the researchers examined about 60 Kepler planets and determined that existing technology is sufficient to capture evidence of exomoons.

The hunt could have powerful implications in the search for life beyond Earth. If exomoons are shown to be potentially habitable, it would open another avenue for biology; habitable moons might even outnumber habitable planets. Could they have bustling ecosystems, with life forms even more exotic than Endor's living teddy bears, swinging between trees Tarzan-style? Stay tuned.

Planetary Birth: Breaking up is hard to do

In "A New Hope," Princess Leia's home planet, Alderaan, is blown to smithereens by the Empire's Death Star as she watches in horror. Real exoplanets also can experience extreme destruction. A white dwarf star was caught in the act of devouring the last bits of a small planet in 2015, observed with the help of NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory. White dwarfs are super-dense stellar remnants about the size of Earth, but with gravity more than 10,000 times that of our sun's surface. Tidal forces could rip a planet caught in its pull to shreds.

Observers thought at first they were seeing a black hole in the act of feeding inside a star cluster on the Milky Way's rim. X-ray observations, however, matched theoretical models of a planet being torn apart by a white dwarf.

A similar observation of a closer white dwarf was made by K2 in 2014. In this case, a tiny rocky object, probably an asteroid, was being vaporized into little more than a dusty ring as it whipped around the star every 4.5 hours.

NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope also picked up signs of debris from a likely asteroid collision in 2014. But rather than a sign of planetary destruction, the colliding asteroids could be part of a construction site. This young star—about 1,200 light years away and only 35 million years old—is surrounded by a ring of dust where such collisions are frequent. The smashed and broken bits fuse into larger and larger agglomerations, eventually forming full-sized planets.

Our own solar system might once have looked very similar, if anyone was watching.

SUBSEA MEETS SPACETHE FIRST EVER NORTH AMERICAN DEMONSTRATION OF SABERTOOTH DOUBLE HULL

Between 12-17 November, Underwater Systems was on location at NASA for a technology symposium in Houston, Texas. The symposium comprised both seminars and product demonstrations of the underwater vehicle - Seaeye Sabertooth.
The product demos took place in NASA´s Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory (NBL), in Houston. NBL is one of the world's largest indoor test tanks and measures 60 x 30 x 12 metres with the capacity to hold approx. 23.5 million litres of water. Dynamics business unit Underwater Systems was on-site to participate in the symposium arranged by the American company OneSubsea, which focused on the future of offshore oil and gas extraction. Around fifty companies took part in the symposium which saw demonstrations from companies such as Shell, ExxonMobil, Chevron, BP, Technip, Woods Hole Oceanographic Inst., US Navy, ConocoPhillips, Schlumberger and Cameron, to name just a few.
"There was a great deal of interest and we were forced to limit the number of participants from companies wanting to attend," says Bert Johansson, Sales Director, Unmanned Underwater Systems.
Well-attended seminars were held over the days on a range of topics such as AUV Technology, Ocean Research and Space Exploration. Underwater Systems served as the sole organiser for two of the days, during which the focus was on demonstrating Seaeye Sabertooth.  A workshop arranged by Saab was also held on one of the days with British Petroleum (BP), who were afforded the opportunity to pose questions to the team from Underwater Systems.
"The days provided us with many good opportunities to meet customers and to gain more insight into the specific requirements they have," says Agneta Kammeby, Head of Business Unit Underwater Systems. "It is very rare for us to be able to meet with between 120 and 130 customers from 50 companies from the USA, Europe and South America one-on-one in this way and in this type of environment."
Demonstration of Seaeye Sabertooth
Showcased during the demonstration were Sabertooth's autonomous capabilities, the vehicles capacity to be manually controlled via an underwater optical communications link and its ability to, without physical contact, transmit data and video through the water. Something that has never been demonstrated before. The participants got the chance to see and learn more about Sabertooth and a presentation of the system was given by Bert Johansson, who guided the visitors through Sabertooth's exhibition programme. They were also provided an opportunity to ask questions during the demonstration. The demonstrations were conducted in collaboration with Sonardyne, who provided the optical link. In addition to Sabertooth's underwater demonstration in the tank, it was also exhibited on the ground for a close-up inspection.
"We demonstrated Sabertooth and its capabilities in NASA's test tank where a full-scale version of the International Space Station, ISS, loomed in the background and where, at the same time, astronauts trained for their missions. It was a resounding success and the environment is fantastic. The fact that we, for the first time, were able to demonstrate Sabertooth’s ability to transmit autonomously collected data from the onboard computer directly to the surface via the optical link was something that also greatly impressed the visitors," says Bert Johansson.
In conjunction with the seminar, Underwater Systems had an exhibit with models of Sabertooth, Falcon and Cougar on display.
"It has been some very interesting days and it is obvious that Sabertooth stands up well to the competition. No one could be anything but impressed with what it could do in the water," says Sven-Inge Svensson, Head of Saab Seaeye SE.
Business Unit Underwater Systems include the development and production of civil and military unmanned underwater vehicles and underwater weapons. The product portfolio includes products such as remotely operated vehicles (ROV), autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV) and hybrids as well as torpedoes and underwater sensors.

أهدى وزير الخارجية الروسي سيرغي لافروف نظيره الأمريكي جون كيري دمية "بابا نويل" بمناسبة عيد رأس السنة، وذلك قبيل المباحثات التي جرت بينهما الثلاثاء 15 ديسمبر/كانون الأول.
والمثير أن كيري وبعد إجراء المباحثات السياسية، قام بمرافقة نائبته فيكتوريا نولاند والسفير الأمريكي في روسيا جون تيفت بنزهة في شارع "أربات" المشهور بموسكو واشترى من أحد المتاجر هناك هدايا لأسرته، وهذا ما أكده السكرتير الصحفي للسفارة الأمريكية وليام ستيفنس على صفحته في التويتر.

Οι μισθοί και οι συντάξεις περικόπηκαν, αρκετοί απολύθηκαν, οι άνεργοι πληθύνονται, πολλοί στέγνωσαν οικονομικά. Και ξαφνικά μας ζητείται απειλητικά και εκβιαστικά να πληρώσουμε, επί πλέον φόρο για το σπίτι που μένουμε σαν να είναι το κράτος πλέον φτωχότερο από τους φτωχούς.
Φτάσαμε, αντί τα έξοδά μας να γίνονται για το φαγητό, το σπίτι και τις ανάγκες μας, ό,τι ξοδεύουμε να πηγαίνει σε δύο φοβερές λέξεις: σε φόρους και σε χρέη. Δεν είναι δύσκολο να αντιληφθεί κανείς το αίσθημα πνιγμού που διακατέχει ίσως και την πλειοψηφία των συμπολιτών μας, σίγουρα και αρκετούς από μας.
Ποιός μπορούσε να φαντασθεί ότι ο υπέροχος και υπερήφανος λαός μας θα έφτανε σε αυτό το κατάντημα;
Να έχει δώσει και την τελευταία σταγόνα του ιδρώτα του, του κόπου του, της αξίας του, και παρά ταύτα να έχουμε ως λαός διασυρθεί παγκοσμίως; Και τώρα χωρίς καμμία ελπίδα και εγγύηση να διεκδικεί το κράτος μας πιεστικά τα δάκρυα και το αίμα μας; Είναι αυτονόητο ότι δεν αντέχουμε άλλο. Δεν είναι υπερβολή αυτό.
Πρέπει όμως να το πούμε. Να το φωνάξουμε στα αυτιά των αρμοδίων: «Ως εδώ! Δεν μπορούμε άλλο. Βρέστε άλλες λύσεις.
Ίσως πιο δύσκολες, αλλά πιο αποδοτικές, πιο έξυπνες και σίγουρα πιο ανθρώπινες. Αν δεν μπορείτε, ομολογήστε την αδυναμία σας. Δεν είναι ντροπή να μην μπορεί κανείς. Είναι όμως απαράδεκτο να επιμένει στην ευθύνη της γενικευμένης καταστροφής μας. Μας φτιάξατε ένα κράτος που προσφέρει στον λαό πολύ λιγότερα από όσα του απαιτεί.
Πρέπει να το καταλάβετε∙ δεν είστε μόνο οφειλέτες στους δανειστές σας, είστε οφειλέτες και στον λαό που ταχθήκατε να υπηρετείτε. Αφού δεν καταφέρνετε την εθνική σωτηρία μέσα από πολιτική συνεργασία, αυτή θα προκύψει αναγκαστικά μέσα από λαϊκή απαίτηση και πρωτο­βουλία». Αγαπητοί μου αδελφοί,
Ήρθε η ώρα που πρέπει ο λαός να δείξει το διαμέτρημα της δύναμής του, να κάνει γνωστά τα όριά του. Ήρθε η ώρα όλοι μαζί να πάρουμε στα χέρια μας τις τύχες μας. Όσο παραμένουμε αδρανείς, όσο μένουμε υποτελείς σε εσφαλμένες ή αβάσταχτες επιλογές, τόσο καθιστούμε τον εαυτό μας συνυπεύθυνο στον αργό αλλά βέβαιο υπαρκτικό εκφυλισμό μας.
Αν δεν ξυπνήσουμε, τελειώσαμε. Δεν θα υπάρχει συνέχεια!
Καιρός πλέον να ξεσηκωθούμε. Τα πάντα πρέπει να αλλάξουν. Και επειδή δεν θα τα αλλάξουν κάποιοι άλλοι, πρέπει να μπούμε στο παιχνίδι όλοι. Όποιος πονάει για την κατάσταση και αγαπάει την αλήθεια έχει θέση σε αυτή την αλλαγή. Κανείς δεν περισσεύει. Όλες οι ανατροπές, όλες οι μεγάλες αλλαγές έγιναν από ηρωικούς ανθρώπους, κυρίως νέους. Όχι από συμβιβασμένους ούτε από αγανακτισμένους, αλλά από υγιώς επαναστα-τημένους.
Όλοι μαζί και πρέπει και μπορούμε και επιβάλλεται να αλλά-ξουμε με δική μας πρωτοβουλία το μέλλον μας.
Όχι με βία, αλλά με δύναμη και αποφασιστικότητα.
Όχι με μηδενιστικές επιλογές, αλλά με καθαρότητα, ηρωισμό και εξυπνάδα.
Σίγουρα και η δική μας ευθύνη ως λαού δεν είναι καθόλου μικρή.
Συμφωνήσαμε με τις μικρονοϊκές πολιτικές επιλογές και τις κάναμε συνή-θειες και νοοτροπία μας. Η ανειλικρίνεια, η αδιαφορία, το βόλεμα, το εύκολο κέρδος, η προσβολή των θεσμών, η ύβρις κατά της πίστης και παράδοσής μας, η ασέβεια κατά του κράτους και των νόμων, οι αλόγιστες διεκδικήσεις αποτέλεσαν κομμάτια της ζωής του νεοέλληνα που δεν μας τιμούν καθόλου. Δεν μας φταίνε μόνον οι άλλοι είτε αυτοί λέγονται κερδοσκόποι είτε ξένα συμφέροντα είτε πολιτικοί. Το δικό μας μερίδιο ευθύνης για το σημερινό μας κατάντημα δεν είναι ευκαταφρόνητο.
Η λύση της μετάνοιας και αλλαγής είναι μονόδρομος.
Τους άλλους δεν μπορούμε να τους αλλάξουμε.
Τη δική μας όμως νοοτροπία και ζωή έχουμε και τη δυνατότητα και την ευθύνη να τις διορθώσουμε.
Ας αρχίσει ως επανάσταση αυτή η αλλαγή από τους εαυτούς μας. Αυτό είναι το πιο ηρωικό.
Ομολογώ ότι και ως Εκκλησία μας κάνανε κομμάτι του καταρρεόντος κρατικού συστήματος. Γι’ αυτό και συχνά μας παρερμηνεύει ο λαός.
Αγκαλιάσαμε το κράτος, στηριχθήκαμε σε αυτό και τραυματίσθηκε η βαθειά σχέση μας με τον λαό. Τον υπηρετήσαμε μεν ως πονεμένο και φτωχό, αλλά δεν τον αγκαλιάσαμε ως κομμάτι της υπόστασής μας. Τουλάχιστον δεν καταφέραμε να μας νοιώσει έτσι. Μολύνθηκε το γάλα της μάνας του, της Εκκλησίας, και απέστρεψε το πρόσωπό του από το στήθος της. Αυτό είναι ο,τι χειρότερο υπάρχει.
Ο λαός είναι ό,τι ιερώτερο έχουμε μετά τον Θεό και η Εκκλησία στη φύση της είναι η ανάσα του λαού. Αυτήν την ανάσα τελευταία στερηθήκαμε. Ήρθε η ώρα να ξαναρχίσει ο ζωτικός θηλασμός. Δεν αμφισβητώ βέβαια ότι είμαστε και θύματα. Κάποιοι μας ξεγέλασαν. Κάποιοι διαχειρίσθηκαν τα θέματά μας με ένοχη ανικανότητα. Κάποιοι μας διέσυραν διεθνώς και μας οδήγησαν στα στόματα των θηρίων αυτού του κόσμου είτε από επιπολαιότητα είτε ενδεχομένως και από ύποπτες σκοπιμότητες. Και να πού φτάσαμε!
Ισοπεδωθήκαμε στο μηδέν της περιουσίας μας και στο τίποτα της αξιοπρέπειάς μας. Παρά ταύτα δεν ψάχνουμε για ενόχους. Τώρα επειγόμαστε για λύσεις. Λύσεις όμως που δεν πατάνε τον λαό, αλλά ανασταίνουν την τιμή του. Ήρθε η ώρα που θα πρέπει όσοι παίρνουν αποφάσεις να καταλάβουν τι συμβαίνει στα σπίτια, στους δρόμους, στα μαγαζιά και στην καθημερινότητα.
Τι συμβαίνει στις ψυχές μας. Αυτό δεν θα το μάθουν από την τρόϊκα ούτε από τις μεταξύ τους διαβουλεύσεις. Θα το μάθουν από τον λαό. Πρέπει την φωνή μας να την ακούσουν. Δεν γίνεται αλλιώς. Θα ήθελα λοιπόν να πω σε όσους δεν μπορούν να πληρώσουν την λεγόμενη «έκτακτη εισφορά ακινήτων» να μη φτάσουν σε απόγνωση. Να ξέρουν ότι θα βρεθούμε όλοι ενωμένοι στο πλευρό τους και θα φωνάξουμε μαζί: «Ουκ αν λάβοις παρά του μη έχοντος». Ας καταλάβουν ότι δεν έχουμε. Δεν μπορούμε.
Φτάσαμε στα όριά μας, αλλά αρνούμαστε να μας τελειώσουν. Αν αδρανήσουμε δεν θα το καταλάβουν. Ο Άγιος Κοσμάς ο Αιτωλός προφή-τευσε πριν από διακόσια πενήντα χρόνια λέγοντας: «Θα σας βάλουν βαρύ και δυσβάσταχτο φόρο ακόμη και στα παράθυρα και στα κοτέτσια, αλλά όμως δεν θα προλάβουν».
Πράγματι, δεν θα προλάβουν!
Μη λυγίσετε μπροστά στην οικονομική χρεωκοπία. Αυτήν ήδη τη ζούμε. Αρνηθείτε τη χρεωκοπία της αξιοπρέπειας, της ιστορίας, της εθνικής συνείδησης. Αυτά μπορούμε και πρέπει να τα διεκδικήσουμε μέχρι τελευταίας ρανίδας. Έστω τώρα, την τελευταία στιγμή.
Τα Μεσόγεια και η Λαυρεωτική είναι μια ευλογημένη περιοχή που μέχρι πρότινος έσφυζε από ανάπτυξη και ευημερία. Τον τελευταίο όμως καιρό όλο και πληθαίνουν αυτοί που με απόγνωση στρέφονται στην Εκκλησία η όπου βρουν, και εκλιπαρούν για συμπαράσταση και βοήθεια.
Πολλοί έχουν λυγίσει, έχουν οικονομικά γονατίσει. Δεν μπορούν να θρέψουν τα παιδιά τους. Έχασαν τον ύπνο τους. Ζουν την απειλή του παρόντος και με τον φόβο του μέλλοντος. Έχουν ιδιοκτησίες, αλλά δεν έχουν χρήματα. Αυτοί πως θα πληρώσουν; Πού να τα βρουν; Θα τους πάρουν το σπίτι; Θα τους κόψουν το ρεύμα; Είναι δυνατόν να βυθίσουν στο σκοτάδι την Κερατέα η το Λαύριο που φιλοξενούν το μεγαλύτερο εργοστάσιο της ΔΕΗ στην πατρίδα μας;
Ό,τι και να συμβεί, αδελφοί μου, θα ήθελα να ξέρετε ότι η τοπική Εκκλησία μας θα δώσει τα πάντα για να σταθεί στο πλευρό σας.
Αν σε έναν κόψουν το ρεύμα, εμείς θα το κόψουμε σε όλους τους ναούς.
Θα κάνουμε γάμους με κεριά στα χέρια και λειτουργίες με δάκρυα στα μάτια.
Με κανέναν τρόπο δεν θα δεχθούμε, τη στιγμή που νοικοκυριά είναι βυθισμένα στο σκοτάδι, οι ναοί να λειτουργούν με αναμμένους τους πολυελαίους.
Όλοι μαζί λοιπόν τώρα, οφείλουμε να πιέσουμε τους εκπροσώπους μας περισσότερο από όσο τους πιέζουνε οι δανειστές. Γιατί η ανάγκη μας για επιβίωση ξεπερνάει την ανάγκη τους να κυριαρχήσουν πάνω μας. Γιατί η αξιοπρέπειά μας αξίζει περισσότερο από τα πάσης φύσεως συμφέροντα.
Γιατί η εθνική μας υπερηφάνεια στηρίζεται σε μια ιστορία που όλοι τους ζηλεύουν. Γιατί την Ευρώπη την βλέπουμε περισσότερο ως οικογένεια που κατανοεί την δυσκολία των λαών παρά ως θηλιά που οδηγεί σε ασφυξία τις κοινωνίες. Δεν μας έμεινε τίποτε άλλο από το να μεταμορφώσουμε ξανά την Ελλάδα σε πατρίδα μας, την ιστορία της σε ταυτότητά μας, τα παραδείγματα των προγόνων μας σε βιώματά μας και να επιστρέψουμε από τον ασύνετο νεοπλουτισμό στην αξιοπρεπή λιτότητα και ολιγάρκεια, από τις υποτελικές υποχωρήσεις στον ηρωισμό και από τον παγκόσμιο διασυρμό στην εθνική υπερηφάνεια και τον πανθομολογούμενο θαυμασμό. Έτσι, ο Θεός, όπως λέγει και ο λαός, δεν θα μας αφήσει, γιατί με αυτόν τον τρόπο δεν θα Τον έχουμε κι εμείς αφήσει.

GEOMAGNETIC STORMS: A co-rotating interaction region (CIR) struck Earth's magnetic field on Dec. 15th, followed shortly thereafter by a high-speed stream of solar wind. The double jolt sparked aG1-class geomagnetic storms and auroras around the Arctic Circle.

A new sunspot region numbered 2470 turns into view off the east limb. The region has been fairly quiet during the past several hours but will likely remain a threat for an isolated moderate M-Flare.

Co-rotating interaction region (CIR)
As the wind expands radially, the flow follows the same spiral pattern, but fast wind "catches up" to slow wind and crashes into it. At the interface between the fast and slow wind, a large pressure pulse forms and eventually steepens to create a forward and reverse shock pair. The thin boundaries separating the streams are called co-rotating interaction regions or CIRs.

SHARK-TRACKING ROBOT GETS CHOMPED BY GREAT WHITE, LIVES TO TELL THE TALE

Aah, the great battles of history. David versus Goliath, Saint George and the Dragon, Muhammad Ali and George Foreman, shark versus underwater drone ... Wait, what? Okay, so this particular showdown won't make the history books, but it's still pretty cool.

According to a post over at Hackaday, this awesome shark-versus-drone encounter comes to us thanks to a partnership between the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute and the Discovery Channel. Back in 2013, the team took an AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle), called REMUS, fitted it with five GoPro cameras and an acoustic homing array, and then deployed it the waters off Mexico's Guadalupe Island to film great white sharks doing their thing in their natural environment. 
The animals had been tagged with acoustic beacons, allowing the REMUS AUV to track them through the water and send information about their movements and behaviour back to the researchers.  
When their AUV began behaving strangely and lost communication, the team knew something was up. As soon as the device surfaced, some distinct gashes in its aluminum hull came into view. A look at the GoPro footage quickly revealed the culprit.

The footage, complete with metal-crunching sounds, shows a great white attacking from below the AUV in what the team suspects was a case of mistaken identity. At the time of filming, the sharks were feeding on seals, so the most likely explanation is the great white thought the drone was just another tasty lunchtime treat.
Aside from capturing underwater battles and allowing top predators to test their mettle (see what I did there?), autonomous drones like this one help researchers gather invaluable information about the daily lives of sharks and other marine creatures. They’re also relatively inexpensive and can be operated from a laptop computer, making them a great option for scientists around the globe.

New strategies for combating illicit art and antiquities trafficking were discussed at a London event following an initiative of the city’s Mayor, Boris Johnson, coupled with the dynamic involvement of Walk of Truth and its newly-launched platform, Culture Crime Watchers Worldwide (CCWW).

Founder of the non-governmental organisation, Walk of Truth, is Cypriot Tasoula Hadjitofi, who
said that she founded the organisation which invites people from all over the world to contribute to the protection of cultural heritage from violence and crime. The CCWW, she said, aims to empower people to share any information they have on illegal trade of cultural heritage.

According to a press release, in an era where the wars in Iraq and Syria threaten the cultural heritage of the Middle East, where illicit art trafficking is flourishing, the London Mayor hosted a ceremony on November 30 and welcomed Members of Parliament. Invited speakers included Tasoula Hadjitofi, Irina Bokova, Director General of UNESCO, renowned Archaeologist Lord Collin Renfrew, Claire Hutcheon of the Art and Antiquities Unit at Scotland Yard, and Peter Stone Blue Shield.

In his speech, David Burrowes MP, founder and co-chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for the Protection of Cultural Heritage (also participating in this initiative), alluded to Hadjitofi, as the “driving force behind this event and the APPG” as well as a “Monuments Lady”, who has dedicated her life to the repatriation of looted cultural artifacts originating from her beloved Cyprus and all over the world.

In his presentation, the London Mayor announced efforts for combating the illicit trafficking of antiquities from terrorists and declared London’s willingness to become a safe haven for looted artefacts emerging from conflict zones. These artifacts, as he clarified, will ideally be repatriated in their country of origin following the conflict resolution.

The City Hall of London meeting was organized on the occasion of the launch of an APPG for the protection of cultural heritage.

"ISIS-Daesh and other terrorist organisations are hell bent on committing appalling acts of terrorism and murder around the world. In addition, they seek to destroy democracy and obliterate history. London stands ready to provide a safe haven for the temporary storage of these irreplaceable artefacts until they can be returned to their home countries", Johnson said.

  • Timeline: The TF-X™ is still in the early stages of development, with a production date estimated at 8-12 years in the future.

Safety

  • If the operator becomes unresponsive, the TF-X™ would automatically implement an emergency auto-land at the nearest airport.

Simplicity

  • Learning how to safely operate the TF-X™ will take substantially less time than would be required for a traditional aircraft.
  • The TF-X™ will give the operator significant freedom in flight – controlled in a manner similar to steering a car.
  • The TF-X™ will be able to fly in either "manual" or "automatic" modes between approved landing zones or airports.

 Convenience

  • The TF-X™ will carry four people in car-like comfort.
  • The TF-X™ will have a non-stop flight range of at least 500 miles.
  • The TF-X™ will fit into a standard construction single car garage.

It is likely that TF-X™ will be more expensive than a “normal car” due to the higher costs of the necessary light-weight materials, but with investment in automotive scale production, early studies indicate that it is possible that the final price point could be on-par with high-end luxury cars of today.  As demand increases, new materials and manufacturing processes will surely be developed and the price may come down further in the distant future.

Vision of TF-X™ Technical Operations:

  • The TF-X™ is a fixed wing street-legal aircraft with electric ground drive and electric power assist on takeoff and landing.
  • The TF-X™ will be able to recharge its batteries either from its engine or by plugging in to electric car charging stations.
  • The TF-X™ will be capable of “auto-landing” at approved landing sites within approved weather limits.
  • Prior to departure, the operator will select a primary target landing zone and backup landing zones.  If the TF-X™ calculates insufficient energy on board to conduct last minute aborts at the first two sites and safely navigate to and land at the third within a 30 minute reserve, or if the forecast weather in any of the three landing zones would be outside the allowable limits, or if any of the selected landing zones are in temporarily restricted airspace (TFRs), departure will not be allowed until appropriate landing zones are selected.
  • If manual operation (sightseeing) or changing weather causes the second backup landing zone to fall outside the range of the limits, the operator will be notified and prompted to select new landing zones within the new restrictions.
  • The TF-X™ operator will have final say over whether an approved landing zone is actually a safe place in which to land, and they may abort the landing attempt at any time.
  • Aborting the third landing at the end of an extended flight would result in the automatic declaration of an emergency and a horizontal (airplane-like) landing at the nearest airport.
  • Normal TF-X™ operations will be conducted only in non-tower controlled airspace (Class E and G) and on the ground.  Operators who wish to operate in tower controlled airspace (Class B, C, or D) will be able to get additional training.
  • Licensed TF-X™ operators will be allowed to apply to add new landing zones to an approved landing zone database.
  • The TF-X™ will advise the operator if they are approaching restricted or tower-controlled airspace, or unnecessarily increasing the risk to human life (as could happen through carelessness, bad intentions, or if the operator becomes incapacitated).  If the operator does not take the appropriate corrective action, the TF-X™ vehicle will automatically notify authorities by “declaring an emergency” on behalf of the operator.
