10 Nights Under the Lights

Experience the Northern Lights like never before with us!

When it comes to bucket lists, seeing the Northern Lights normally sits pretty high up, but not everyone can find the time to trek far into the north to catch a glimpse. So with that in mind, we sent our roving timelapser, Joel Schat, to Yellowknife's Aurora Village to capture the stunning natural phenomena on camera.

In his own words, here's what Joel had to say about the experience:

"Wake up at 4pm after a long cold night under the Aurora Borealis and the first thing I would do is check the forecast for tonight's show. Eat some dinner, get bundled up for the -40 degrees CELSIUS weather, grab my cameras and go! It is very difficult to predict the Northern Lights and I wasn't going to miss any of it!

All of a sudden it would appear, shortly after sunset you could start to see it flowing through the sky! The brighter it got the faster it moved! At times it literally filled the sky!

It was so cold standing outside for the hours of watching this phenomenon that my beard would freeze solid! The other crazy cold thing was any camera cables had to be defrosted before bent or they would simply snap in half!"

Keyhole Falls isn't your typical waterfall. The 3,000-cubic-metre-per-minute flow shoots out of a massive rock wall situated on the Lillooet River in BC, Canada. Subject to constantly high water levels from coastal mountain snowmelt, it's nearly impossible to see, and tough to scout.

After an abandoned first mission, Aniol and the crew went back for a second look. Casual depth tests indicated reason for concern – but no line of sight between Aniol and the support crew, coupled with walkie-talkies dying, meant communication went from poor to non-existent. Aniol decided to run it anyway...

Volkswagen Cross Coupé GTE - Official Trailer

Δημοσιεύτηκε στις 12 Ιαν 2015
With the world premiere of the 5-seater SUV concept car, Wolkswagen is offering a further preview of the latest SUV model series that is fitted with a sporty and economical V6 plug-in hybrid drive for the first time.

The new design language is also found in the interior of the Cross Coupé GTE. For example, the consistent horizontal structure of the instrument panel creates a clearly arranged, spacious and yet also progressive atmosphere. This is also thanks to the seamlessly integrated displays and chrome elements that open up a new dimension of information and operating quality with interactive gesture control.
The seats come in elegant bi-color nappa leather. A dark "Ink Blue" creates a bucket effect for the comfortable sports seats, while the seat centre panels feature perforated leather. What's more, attachments for tablets are incorporated in the headrests of the rear seats. The Volkswagen "Media Control" app enables the tablets to access various infotainment functions via WLAN.The SUV concept car is powered by a 3.6-litre V6 petrol engine and two electric motors. The six-cylinder direct-injection engine (FSI) delivers power of 206 kW/280 PS and maximum torque of 350 Nm. The two electric motors have power output of 40 kW and 220 Nm and 85 kW and 270 Nm respectively. The total output of the system adds up to 265 kW/360 PS. With this full power, the Cross Coupé GTE, which has a top speed of up to 209 km/h, accelerates to 60 mph (97 km/h) in just 6.0 seconds. Thanks to the lithium-ion battery in the centre tunnel (energy content of 14.1 kWh), the Cross Coupé GTE can travel a distance of 32 kilometers powered purely by electricity. The driver can use the GTE button to switch to GTE mode and activate the particularly agile side of the concept car. This makes the accelerator pedal, gearbox and steering characteristic even sportier. In addition, the FSI and the electric motors work together in GTE mode during boosting to deliver the full system output and the maximum system torque. After the Cross Blue concept car previously shown in Detroit, the Cross Coupé GTE now offers a further look ahead at the new mid-size SUV model series that is based on the modular transverse matrix (MQB). The Cross Blue production model will be built at Volkswagen's Chattanooga plant and presented next year.

Codex Gigas (the Devil’s Bible) - the largest manuscript in the world

Codex Gigas

Codex Gigas (the Devil’s Bible) - the largest manuscript in the world

Codex Gigas, otherwise known as ‘the Devil’s Bible’ is the largest and probably one of the strangest manuscripts in the world.  It is so large that it is said to have taken more than 160 animal skins to make it and takes at least two people to lift it.  It measures approximately 1 metre in length.
According to legend, the medieval manuscript was made out of a pact with the ‘devil’, which is why it is sometimes referred to as the Devil’s Bible. It was written in Latin during the 13th century AD, and although the origin of the manuscript is unknown, a note in the manuscript states that it was pawned in the monastery at Sedlec in 1295.
Codex GigasThe story behind the making of Codex Gigas (“the giant codex”) is that it was the work of one monk who was sentenced to death by being walled up alive. Indeed, an analysis on the text does suggest that it was written by just one scribe due to the level of uniformity throughout.  The legend says that the monk produced the manuscript in just one night… with the devil’s help. However, it is not known where this legend started and it is suspected that it was religiously propagated.
Stories and legends say that the Codex Gigas brought disaster or illness on whoever possessed it during its history.  Fortunately, the National Library in Stockholm, where it is currently housed, appears immune to the curse of the codex!
Codex Gigas contains a complete vulgate Latin translation of the Bible as well as five other major texts. It begins with the Old Testament and continues with ‘Antiquities of the Jews’ by Flavius Josephus (1st century AD; ‘Encyclopedia Etymologiae’ by Isidore of Seville (6th century AD); a collection of medical works of Hippocrates, Theophilus and others; the New Testament; and ‘The Chronicle of Bohemia’ by Cosmas of Prague (1050 AD).
Smaller texts are also included in the manuscript with the most famous ones including: text on exorcism, magic formulas, a picture of the Heavenly City, and a full page illustration of the Devil.  The illustration is the reason why legend says the codex was written with the devil’s help.
According to the National Geographic, it would take one person working continuously, day and night, for five years to recreate the contents of Codex Gigas by hand (excluding the illustrations). Therefore, realistically it would have taken at least 25 years for the scribe to create the codex from scratch. Yet, all this time, the writing retained an incredible uniformity from start to finish. This may be the source of the legend which says that the monk wrote it in just one day.
The manuscript is currently displayed at the National Library in Stockholm where you can also view the digital pages of the Codex. Anyone in Sweden should pay a visit to the see Codex Gigas – and do not be afraid, it is quite safe to read the so-called Devil’s Bible!

Top 5 Moments from Red Bull Frozen Rush 2015

Δημοσιεύτηκε στις 10 Ιαν 2015
There are always major moments that stand out in your memory at any event. Whether they mean much in the end or not, those moments are spectacular on their own. The 2015 edition of Red Bull Frozen Rush had more than a few instances that made fans cringe or cheer (or both), five of which you can see in the video above.

5. Rob MacCachren and Scott Douglas managed to time the over/under jump perfectly on the first lap of their matchup, with MacCachren jumping directly over Douglas at full speed.

4. Rail slides in the snow are usually restricted to skis and snowboards, but Bryce Menzies managed the feat with a 900-horsepower Pro 4 truck on his way to a heat win.

3. The LCQ typically provides just a little action before the big show, but when Carl Renezeder and Todd LeDuc hit the final turn of their last effort to make the main bracket, they gave the crowd the closest finish of the event.

2. Ricky Johnson was in the fight of the day in the final race to claim the 2015 Frozen Rush crown, but a miscue on one of the jumps sent the 2014 champ off his line.

1. Douglas and MacCachren make the list again because on the last lap of their race to determine the final podium spot, the two nearly collided on the straightaway and then dove into the final turn side by side for a fantastic finish.

Charlie Hebdo Suspects Killed, Market Shooter Dead

Posted: Updated:
Two brothers believed behind Wednesday's attack on the offices of French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo were killed on Friday, Agence France Presse reported, culminating a dramatic day in which France was shaken by two simultaneous hostage crises.
Police cornered brothers Cherif and Said Kouachi on Friday inside a printing house in the town of Dammartin-en-Goele near Charles de Gaulle International Airport, where the suspects had been holed up since Friday morning.
A hostage taken by the brothers in Dammartin-en-Goele was released before the siege. An employee at the printing house who was hiding in the building's cafeteria was freed by police after the raid. The Associated Press said the brothers told police negotiators they wanted to die as martyrs.
A government source told Reuters that the Kouachis were killed after stepping out of the building and opening fire. The brothers had a loaded M82 rocket launcher, two Kalashnikov assault rifles and two automatic pistols, according to Paris prosecutor Francois Molins.
Police also raided a kosher supermarket in Paris, where a gunman identified as Amedy Coulibaly opened fire and took several people hostage. Molins said the gunman killed four people when he entered the supermarket. Four more were injured, officials said. An Israeli official said the police raid freed 15 hostages, according to The Associated Press. The gunman himself was killed in the police assault. Coulibaly was found with a Kalashnikov assault rifle and a Skorpion military pistol, according to Molins.

According to The Associated Press, Coulibaly had earlier threatened to hurt the hostages if police raided the building where the Kouachi brothers were holed up.
Police released a photo of Coulibaly and a woman named Hayat Boumedienne, who is believed to be his accomplice. As of early Saturday, French police are still looking for Boumedienne. She had been interviewed by anti-terrorist police in 2010, and told police she had visited the radical Islamist Djamel Beghal, Le Monde reported.
Coulibaly is also believed to be a suspect in yesterday's killing of a policewoman on the southern edge of Paris. Several news outlets reported Friday that Coulibaly had a history of crime and violence.
Police told AP that Coulibaly appeared to know Said Kouachi and Cherif Kouachi. The three men are believed to have been members of the same Paris jihadist cell that sent French fighters to Iraq a decade ago, a police source told ReutersAccording to France's L'Obs, Coulibaly spent time with Cherif Kouachi when they were both in prison in Fleury-Mérogis in 2005 and 2006. The wife of Kouachi exchanged 500 phone calls with the girlfriend of Coulibaly, Molins said.
Coulibaly was sentenced in 2010 for his part in an effort to free Islamist militant Smain Ali Belkacem from jail, Reuters reported. The BBC noted that the two Kouachi brothers were also named in connection to the attack, but weren't charged because of a lack of evidence.
French television channel BFMTV published an edited version of two interviews their staff conducted on Friday with men who claimed to be Cherif Kouachi and Amedy Coulibaly.
The man who claimed to be Cherif Kouachi told a journalist at the channel that he was sent by Al Qaeda in Yemen. "We are the defenders of the prophet," he added. The caller who said he was Amedy Coulibaly contacted BFMTV in the afternoon as the hostage crisis in the supermarket was ongoing. He said he belonged to the Islamic State and had coordinated with the Kouachi brothers.

On Wednesday, two masked and heavily armed gunmen stormed the offices of Charlie Hebdo in Paris while the staff was in an editorial meeting, killing 10 journalists and two policemen. Several others were injured in the attack. Witnesses told police that one of the gunmen shouted, "We have avenged the prophet. We killed Charlie Hebdo."
Hours after the attack, French authorities identified three suspects: Hamyd Mourad, Said Kouachi and Cherif Kouachi.
Mourad turned himself in to authorities at a police station about 145 miles northeast of Paris on Wednesday night, saying he had seen his own name circulating on social media. Friends of Mourad told French media that he was in school at the time of the attack.
Cherif Kouachi, 32, was convicted in 2008 for his involvement in a Paris-based cell that trafficked French Muslims to fight in Iraq, and he served 18 months of a three-year sentence.
U.S. and European sources close to the investigation said on Thursday they believe Said Kouachi had previously traveled to Yemen to train with the al Qaeda affiliate in that country.
The Associated Press reported on Friday that a member of the al Qaeda affiliate in Yemen said the group had directed the attack against Charlie Hebdo. In a statement in English provided to the AP, the member said "the leadership of AQAP directed the operations and they have chosen their target carefully."

The deaths of Coulibaly and the Kouachi brothers came at the end of a tense day in France. Schools in the neighborhood of the kosher market were evacuated and authorities had ordered shops in a part of the Marais neighborhood to close. The highway around Paris was closed as well.
French President Francois Hollande addressed the nation in a televised speech on Friday evening. The president lauded the police who participated in the operations. "I want to tell them we are proud of you," Hollande said.
The president called the hostage crisis in Vincennes an anti-Semitic attack, and called on the country to remain united.
Hollande will participate in a unity march in the capital Paris on Sunday and has invited several heads of state to join him. British Prime Minister David Cameron, Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi and German Chancellor Angela Merkel have confirmed their attendance.
U.S. President Barack Obama spoke on the terrorist incidents, saying, "We're hopeful the immediate threat is now resolved."
"In the streets of Paris, the world has seen once again what terrorists stand for," Obama said. "They have nothing to offer but hatred and human suffering."
