Philippines Braces for Powerful Typhoon

Typhoon Hagupit has slammed into the eastern Philippines, where more than 650,000 people have fled to safety.

The country's weather agency says the typhoon, packing maximum sustained winds of 175 kilometers (109 miles) per hour and gusts of 210 kph (130 mph), made landfall late Saturday in Dolores town in central Eastern Samar province.

Hagupit's winds and pounding rain knocked out power and toppled trees in Dolores and other eastern coastal towns hours before it barreled inland in a region still haunted by the massive death and destruction wrought by Typhoon Haiyan in November last year.

The Philippines' 120,000-strong military has gone on full alert to respond to a possible catastrophe.

A movie of weather over Europe during November 2014.

Many countries in Europe reported unusually mild weather in November - with a surprising lack of frost for late autumn. There were several episodes of severe weather and extreme rainfall, however.

Northern Italy and Switzerland had severe flooding in places, as well as landslides, after episodes of torrential rain from 4-12 November (case study: http://www.eumetsat.int/website/home/...)
Jutland, in Denmark, had a notable downpour on November 3; there was extreme rainfall in east Tirol and upper Carinthia in Austria early in the month;
The coast of southern France in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur had episodes of extremely heavy rain from 8 to 12 November and again on 14 and 15 November;
One storm in Courelinhas county in Portugal brought a suspected tornado; while the Phoenix Park weather station in Dublin had its wettest November day since 2002 on 13 November, part of a month where it received double the long-term average rain.

There were also episodes of fog and low cloud, which caused delays at airports because of low visibility, and some countries got their first snow as meteorological autumn officially drew to a close.

The 'Natural Colour RGB' images used in the movie are taken from EUMETSAT's Meteosat-10 satellite in geostationary orbit 36,000 km above the Earth. The Natural Colour RGB product makes use of three solar channels: VIS0.6, VIS0.8 and NIR1.6. In this colour scheme vegetation appears greenish because of its large reflectance in the VIS0.8 channel (the green beam) compared to the NIR1.6 (red beam) and VIS0.6 (blue beam) channels.

Water clouds with small droplets have large reflectance at all three channels and hence appear whitish, while snow and ice clouds appears cyan because ice strongly absorbs in NIR1.6 (no red).

Bare ground appears brown because of the larger reflectance in the NIR1.6 than at VIS0.6, and the ocean appears black because of the low reflectance in all three channels.

Intense Gun Battles In Russia After Chechen Terror Attack

Islamic jihadists entered Grozny, the capital of Chechnya,  and killed three police officers at a traffic control point. They then occupied a ten story building and a nearby svchool at the city’s center.   Six of the gunmen were killed by security officers inside the building, which was gutted by fire that spread to a nearby market, it said.

Ten police officers were killed and 28 more were wounded. at least nine insurgents were killed in the fighting. 

Rumors have swirled that the attackers were linked to the Islamic State death cult, after Chechen ISIS fighters in Iraq and Syria threatened Russia as the next target. ~Will

Ariana Grande seemed to have the time of her life recording the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show on Tuesday night…except for when she was pummeled by a model’s wings.

As Elsa Hosk strutted down the runway with the giant wings attached to her back, she almost didn’t make way for Ariana, who was performing alongside her onstage. Lucky for our favorite “Santa Tell Me” singer, she’s totally cool with it. She even created a hashtag for the whole situation.

You got to admit, though: the picture is priceless.

The US lingerie label brought its annual spectacle to London for the first time on Tuesday, dazzling guests with a high-octane mix of fashion and entertainment that featured 47 extravagantly dressed models and performances by Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande and Ed Sheeran.
Models sashayed down the catwalk wearing lingerie paired with extravagant costumes that included giant butterfly wings, feather skirts, and gold knee-high stiletto boots.
Top models Adriana Lima and Alessandra Ambrosio donned the brand's "fantasy bras" - encrusted with thousands of jewels and worth $2 million (£1.27m) each - and Karlie Kloss wore gilded angel wings made of 18 carat gold.
Unlike most mainstream fashion shows, models walking for the lingerie label are told to have fun and flirt with the audience.
The models got to wink, dance and laugh onstage with Swift, who appeared in a glamorous pink and black lace outfit. The singer later changed into a racy black lingerie set worn with a matching lace cape.

2 December 2014 ~ Following a big solidarity protest to anarchist Nikos Romanos, where 8.000-10.000 people took part in Athens last night, fierce riots broke out in the "Exarchia" area of Athens, while Romano's health is in a critical condition (22 days on hunger strike) and the greek government pretends he does not exist.

3 other anarchists are also on hunger strike in solidarity to Nikos Romanos.

Nikos Romanos is demanding to be able to make use of educational leaves to attend university classes, while by studying in prison he has succeeded in the admission exams. Any other prison inmate is entitled to university prison leaves that Romanos is denied, because of his anarchist political beliefs. The greek State also punishes him because of his defiant stance in denying to attend an award ceremony, where the greek Minister of Justice handed awards to prison inmates that succeeded in the university entrance exams.

Nikos is currently in Athens general hospital Gennimatas, under a strong custody of the police. Physician Pantelia (Lina) Vergopoulou, who visited him on 28/11, reports that the comrade remains in a critical condition with life-threatening complications.

Anarchist prisoner Yannis Michailidis is also on hunger strike since November 17, 2014, as a form of solidarity to the struggle of Nikos Romanos. Several days ago, Yannis Michailidis also needed to be hospitalized, after he was diagnosed with bradycardia. Yannis is currently in Piraeus general hospital Tzaneio, also under the strong custody of the police.

Politis and Mpourzoukos are also on hunger strike since December 1.

Weary Herakles bust to be returned by US to Turkey

The top half of the Weary Herakles statue, which was bought by the Boston Museum of Fine Arts in 1982, is to be returned to its native Turkey.

After an ongoing dispute, the MFA will reunite the bust with its lower half at the Antalya Museum later this year.

The announcement is seen as a victory for Turkey which is trying to retrieve artefacts it believes have been looted throughout the years.

It is thought the full statue will return to Boston on a short-term loan.

The top half of the sculpture of weary demigod Hercules was purchased in 1981 from a German dealer, by the MFA and late New York art collecter Leon Levy.

A year later, it was displayed at the US museum before being put into storage in 2007.

Turkish archaeologists were convinced the bust had been looted and taken from the country. At the same time, the lower half of the statue was discovered in 1980 at Perge in southern Turkey.

The MFA always denied that was the case, insisting the bust could have been found "any time since the Italian Renaissance".

Speaking to the Times newspaper, Katherine Getchell from the Boston Museum, said: "It's only in the last couple of years that they've presented us with photos and other evidence of looting from that site."

This is the latest victory for Turkey's campaign to track down lost antiquity.

In May, the Pergamon Museum in Germany agreed to return a Hittite sphinx after the Turkish Culture Minister threatened to ban German archaeologists from digs in the country.

Ertugrul Gunay told the Times that the country plans to "fight in the same way for all our other artefacts".

Τα πρώτα χρήματα που είχε εξασφαλίσει για την ανασκαφή της Αμφίπολης η αρχαιολόγος κ. Περιστέρη, 
το 2009, τελείωσαν μέσα σε λίγους μήνες.

Η Αμφίπολη, οι χορηγοί και η κρίση

Καθώς η ανασκαφή της Αμφίπολης έφτανε στο τέλος της, μια από τις συζητήσεις στο υπουργείο Πολιτισμού ήταν η εξασφάλιση της χρηματοδότησης για την επόμενη φάση. Μπορεί για τη συγκεκριμένη ανασκαφή, που ήταν η απόλυτη «πολιτική» προτεραιότητα των τελευταίων μηνών, η χρηματοδότηση να εξασφαλίστηκε γρήγορα –η ένταξη του έργου στο πρόγραμμα δημοσίων επενδύσεων θεωρείται δεδομένη– αυτό όμως δεν ίσχυε από την αρχή.

Τα πρώτα χρήματα που είχε εξασφαλίσει η αρχαιολόγος κ. Περιστέρη, το 2009, τελείωσαν σε λίγους μήνες, όταν έκανε τον γύρο σε νομαρχία και υπουργεία μιλώντας «για πέπλο μυστηρίου στον λόφο». Ο τότε νομάρχης Σερρών της έδωσε 20.000 ευρώ. Τον επόμενο χρόνο κατάφερε και πήρε ακόμα 80.000 ευρώ μέσω της περιφέρειας και με αυτά τα χρήματα ξεκίνησε το καλοκαίρι του 2012 να σκάβει κάθετα του λόφου, ανακαλύπτοντας τον περίβολο.

«Σταματήσαμε γιατί δεν έχουμε χρηματοδότηση», θα δηλώσει σε τοπικό κανάλι εκείνο τον Σεπτέμβριο. «Αν υπάρξει χρηματοδότηση θα δούμε ωραία πράγματα». Ο τότε υπουργός Μακεδονίας και Θράκης κ. Καράογλου εκταμίευσε 50.000 ευρώ και προσπάθησε παράλληλα να βρει ιδιωτική χρηματοδότηση από δύο Βορειοελλαδίτες επιχειρηματίες, αλλά όταν έφτασε η ώρα να συζητήσουν τα ποσά έκρινε πως ήταν πολύ μικρά και δεν δέχτηκε τη χορηγία. Η κ. Περιστέρη, όμως, εξασφάλισε άλλα 50.000 από το υπουργείο Πολιτισμού και συνέχισε. Τα επόμενα δύο χρόνια το υπουργείο –πολύ πιο γενναιόδωρο πλέον ενόψει των ανακαλύψεων– εκταμίευσε ακόμη 240.000 ευρώ.

Τα σενάρια για τάφο της Ρωξάνης, του υιού ή του ίδιου του Μέγα Αλέξανδρου ήταν αρκετά για να εκταμιεύσουν οι εκάστοτε υπουργοί και νομάρχες συνολικά 440.000 ευρώ. Ακόμα και με τις κάποιες μικρές καθυστερήσεις, η ανασκαφή της Αμφίπολης παραμένει μοναδικό παράδειγμα επιτυχημένης χρηματοδότησης από το κράτος. Και αυτό γιατί οι αρχαιολόγοι της υπηρεσίας, οι πανεπιστημιακοί ή οι ξένες αρχαιολογικές σχολές που επιθυμούν να διεξαγάγουν συστηματικές ανασκαφές –με άδεια δηλαδή του ΚΑΣ και σε βάθος χρόνου– αναγκάζονται να κυνηγούν μόνοι τους χρηματοδότηση, αφού το υπουργείο Πολιτισμού βάσει νόμου δεν έχει καμία υποχρέωση να τους επιχορηγεί.

Ιδρύματα ή ιδιώτες

Καταφύγιο βρίσκουν σε συγκεκριμένα ιδρύματα ή ιδιώτες που εδώ και χρόνια αθόρυβα στηρίζουν τις ανασκαφές τους. Ένα από αυτά είναι το Ίδρυμα Ψύχα, που διαχειρίζεται το κληροδότημα της οικογένειας Ψύχα, ομογενών από την Αίγυπτο, και από τους τόκους ενός λογαριασμού στο εξωτερικό, χρηματοδοτεί 67 ανασκαφές. «Ο προϋπολογισμός μας όμως λόγω της μείωσης των επιτοκίων έχει μειωθεί στο μισό», εξηγεί η πρόεδρος κ. Εύα Σακελλαράκη. «Υπάρχει η σκέψη να χρηματοδοτούμε λιγότερες ανασκαφές με περισσότερα χρήματα, αλλά υπάρχουν και νέοι αρχαιολόγοι που αν δεν πάρουν από εμάς δεν θα πάρουν από πουθενά».

Και ενώ γίνεται η προσπάθεια όλα αυτά να σταθμιστούν ώστε να μη μείνει κάποια ανασκαφή στον αέρα, συνεχώς προκύπτουν νέες ανάγκες. Όπως ο μισθός του επιστάτη στη Ζώμυνθο, στον Ψηλορείτη, που αδυνατεί να πληρώσει η τοπική Αρχαιολογική Εφορεία. Η ανασκαφή του μοναδικού μινωικού ανακτόρου δεν έχει ακόμα ολοκληρωθεί και ο χώρος είναι στο έλεος των αρχαιοκαπήλων.

Άλλη βασική πηγή χρηματοδότησης των ανασκαφών είναι το Ινστιτούτο Μελέτης Προϊστορίας Αιγαίου του Malcomn Wiener. Ο φιλέλληνας δικηγόρος με ταλέντο στις επενδύσεις και απωθημένο την αρχαιολογία διατηρεί προσωπική επαφή με τους αρχαιολόγους που χρηματοδοτεί, τους στέλνει τα κείμενα για την προϊστορία που γράφει και όταν έρχεται την Ελλάδα τους βγάζει όλους μαζί για φαγητό. Τελευταία φορά πριν από δύο χρόνια, σε γαλλικό εστιατόριο στο Κολωνάκι, ένα από τα θέματα συζήτησης ήταν και οι διαρκώς αυξανόμενες δυσκολίες στη χρηματοδότηση από τις γνωστές πηγές.

«Χτυπήστε πόρτες»

Η κρίση λίγους μήνες αργότερα θα ακουμπήσει ακόμα και το ινστιτούτο του – κάποιες επενδύσεις δεν πήγαν καλά και αναγκάστηκε να μειώσει σημαντικά τη χρηματοδότηση σε κάποιες ανασκαφές. Μία από αυτές ήταν της καθηγήτριας Ιφιγένειας Τουρναβίτου, που σκάβει στις Μυκήνες. Άγγλος συνάδελφός της την έβγαλε από το αδιέξοδο με μια συμβουλή: «Χτύπα όσες περισσότερες πόρτες μπορείς». Έτσι έκανε και τελικά ένας εφοπλιστής, που δεν ήθελε όμως καμία δημοσιότητα, και μια τοπική επιχείρηση μαρμάρου χρηματοδότησαν την ανασκαφή της, η οποία έχει φέρει στο φως έναν νέο οικισμό έξω από τα ανάκτορα των Μυκηνών.

Πολλές –πανεπιστημιακές– πόρτες είχε αναγκαστεί να χτυπήσει και ο καθηγητής Αλέξανδρος Μαζαράκης Αινιάν για να εξασφαλίσει πόρους για τις ανασκαφές της Σχολής Αρχαιολογίας στο Πανεπιστήμιο Θεσσαλίας. Με κόπο εκταμιεύονται περίπου 2.000 ευρώ ανά ανασκαφή, που καλύπτουν όμως ένα πολύ μικρό κομμάτι των εξόδων των φοιτητών που ταξιδεύουν κάθε καλοκαίρι σε όλη την Ελλάδα για να εκπαιδευτούν στο χώμα.

Σε μία από τις ανασκαφές του αρχαιολόγου στην Κύθνο, μάλιστα, ο δήμος και οι κάτοικοι έχουν εδώ και χρόνια αγκαλιάσει την ομάδα, στηρίζοντάς τους με στέγη και φαγητό. Η ανακάλυψη ενός ασύλητου ναού με πλούσια αφιερώματα είχε δώσει στο νησί ελπίδα πως θα φτιαχνόταν ένα μουσείο. Το εγχείρημα, όμως, δεν προχώρησε. Τα πολύτιμα ευρήματα παραμένουν σε συρτάρια και φέτος για πρώτη χρονιά ο δήμος δεν κατάφερε να πληρώσει τα έξοδα που συνήθως αναλάμβανε. Τελευταία στιγμή ο καθηγητής δέχτηκε τηλεφώνημα από τον εφοπλιστή Θανάση Μαρτίνο, ο οποίος κάλυψε τα έξοδα και έτσι πραγματοποιήθηκε η πανεπιστημιακή αποστολή.

Για το ιερό του Δία

Η χορηγία από ιδιώτες παρέμενε για πολλά χρόνια ταμπού στους κλειστούς κύκλους των αρχαιολόγων και αυτό γιατί τα κίνητρα μιας πολύ μικρής μειοψηφίας δεν ήταν ανιδιοτελή. Αυτή η νοοτροπία όμως πλέον αλλάζει. «Είναι αναγκαίο», εξηγεί η καθηγήτρια του πανεπιστημίου της Αριζόνας, Μαίρη Βογιατζή, η οποία μαζί με τον καθηγητή David Romano και την Αμερικανική Αρχαιολογική Σχολή ανέσκαψαν το όρος Λύκαιο. «Σε περιόδους κρίσης, προτεραιότητα στη χρηματοδότηση παίρνουν άλλες βασικές ανάγκες του κόσμου. Αυτό θα πρέπει να κάνει εμάς τους αρχαιολόγους πιο δημιουργικούς στην εύρεση χρηματοδότησης από ιδιώτες».

Έτσι, πριν από μερικά χρόνια ο Romano ήρθε σε επαφή με τον ελληνικής καταγωγής Νίκο Κάραμποτς, ο οποίος έχει χτίσει μια αυτοκρατορία εκδίδοντας βιβλία με παζλ και γρίφους και είχε μεγάλο φιλανθρωπικό έργο, αλλά καμία σχέση με την αρχαιολογία. «Του μίλησε για την ανασκαφή που θέλαμε να κάνουμε κοντά στο χωριό των γονιών του. Είναι πολύ περήφανος για την ελληνική του καταγωγή και έτσι δέχτηκε να μας χρηματοδοτήσει».

Η ανασκαφή έφερε τελικά στο φως ένα από τα παλαιότερα ιερά λατρείας του Δία. Το 2010, μάλιστα, ο Κάραμποτς ταξίδεψε με το ιδιωτικό του αεροπλάνο στην Καλαμάτα και επισκέφθηκε τον χώρο. Συγκινημένος μίλησε στους νέους φοιτητές αρχαιολόγους για την αγάπη του για την Ελλάδα, και για το πόσο περήφανος ένιωθε που στήριζε τη δουλειά τους. Στα επόμενα σχέδιά του είναι η δημιουργία ενός μουσείου στη Μεγαλόπολη.
