Hidden Greenland Canyons Mean More Sea Level Rise

Hidden Greenland Canyons Mean More Sea Level Rise

Scientists at NASA and the University of California, Irvine (UCI), have found that canyons under Greenland's ocean-feeding glaciers are deeper and longer than previously thought, increasing the amount of Greenland's estimated contribution to future sea level rise.
"The glaciers of Greenland are likely to retreat faster and farther inland than anticipated, and for much longer, according to this very different topography we have discovered," said Mathieu Morlighem, a UCI associate project scientist who is lead author of the new research paper. The results were published Sunday in the journal Nature Geoscience.
Ice loss from Greenland has accelerated during the last few decades. However, older ice sheet models predicted the speedup would be temporary because the glaciers would soon melt back onto higher ground and stabilize. The models therefore projected Greenland's contribution to global sea level rise would be limited.
Morlighem's new topography shows southern Greenland's ragged, crumbling coastline is scored by more than 100 canyons beneath glaciers that empty into the ocean. Many canyons are well below sea level as far as 60 miles (100 kilometers) inland. Higher ground, where glaciers could stabilize, is much farther from the coastline than previously thought. The finding calls into question the idea that the recent accelerated ice loss will be short-lived.
Buried under the Greenland Ice Sheet, the subcontinent's bedrock topography has been estimated using soundings from ice-penetrating radar. However, the wet and fractured ice along the southern coastline cluttered the radar soundings so that large swaths of the bed remained invisible. To overcome that problem, Morlighem and his colleagues devised an advanced technique to create a more accurate map. The technique makes the best use of several kinds of data: ice thickness measurements derived from airborne radar; satellite radar interferometry data on the speed and direction of ice movement: and estimates of snowfall and surface melt to the sea. By combining the different types of data, they were able to map the bed topography along Greenland's margins with unprecedented precision and detail.
"We have been able to make a quantum leap in our knowledge of bed topography beneath ice sheets in the last decade, thanks to the advent of missions like NASA's Operation IceBridge in combination with satellite data on the speed these ice sheets are flowing," said co-author Eric Rignot of UCI and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, California.
The same research team reported new findings on glacial melt in West Antarctica last week.
"Together the papers illustrate clearly the globe's ice sheets will contribute far more to sea level rise than current projections show," said Rignot.
The study used synthetic aperture radar data collected in 2008-2009 by the Japanese Advanced Land Observing System Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (ALOS PALSAR), the Canadian RADARSAT-1, the German TerraSAR-X, and the European Envisat Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR). Ice thinning rates were derived from NASA's Airborne Topographic Mapper and ICESat data, and ice thickness data came from NASA's Operation IceBridge airborne campaigns.

“Update: Death toll rises to 168 –Massacre of Christians in North Nigeria (Gwoza), By Our Nigerian Foreign Correspondent

(Voice of the Persecuted) The death toll in the bloody attack on the Christian community continues to rise this morning. As of 4th June 2014, a reliable source who went to Attagara reconfirmed the number of casualties stating that an additional 88 bodies were found, bringing the total to 168 casualty. “I counted the corpses with my hands”, he said. Most of them were children and youths.

Another source gave some information on the figures.
52 people died at the church compound.
48 in the nearby village, Aganjara.
29 were found death in a cave after the insurgents trapped and opened fire on them.
3 were roasted in a fire.
36 were slain with a knife and thrown on the street.

“The attack was so terrible that the actual figure could yet be determined,” he said.

A woman who witnessed the slaughter of her 9 year old son, wailed as she spoke to our correspondent by phone describing the terror. They drug her son and slew him. They then grabbed for her younger child who is still nursing, intending to slaughter the innocent. She gripped the insurgents and was able to escape with her baby. “I ran for over 40 kilometers. Only God knows the people that were killed,” said the woman.

A elderly Christian man faced the Boko Haram and died as martyr when the insurgents slashed his body part by part with a sword. He had bravely told them,

“IF YOU DON’T REPENT OF KILLING INNOCENT CHRISTIANS THAT BELIEVE IN JESUS, THEIR BLOOD WILL JUDGE YOU.”

This statement provoked the insurgents and they beheaded the 80 year old man, a witness said.

It was gathered that more people were still missing and many of the dead had not yet been retrieved from the hills and nearby bush. “I don’t know how to explain this tragedy,” a Pastor lamented. “We just found 2 children lying dead in the toilet.” A Community leader who demanded anonymity, confirmed that so many corpses were seen without heads. Many are still in hills and backyards,” he noted.

Very early this morning, the insurgents were seen headed towards Jubrili village with over 400 goats and sheep, 50 cows and valuable items they had looted from the Christians. 10 of them were seen carrying AK 47’s and moving the animals, a witness said. “Go there, you will see them,” he told our correspondent. “They would never crossed to Cameroon because the border is being well guarded. But they were trying to move the animals to Sambisa, because our security would never be there,” he added.

More details tomorrow…..

Google Glass gun app would provide 'mind-blowing' ability to shoot around corners

Google Glass gun app would provide 'mind-blowing' ability to shoot around corners

Tracking Point, a Texas company that develops precision-tracking technology for firearms, announced via a YouTube video on Thursday that it has combined wearable technology, like Google Glass, with a Precision Guided Firearm (PGF) in a way that allows users to shoot around corners. The new combined system is called ShotView.
A new Google Glass application would allow shooters to aim around corners while protecting them from return fire, the app developer claims.
“When paired with wearable technology, PGFs can provide unprecedented benefits to shooters, such as the ability to shoot around corners, from behind low walls, and from other positions that provide exceptional cover,” the company said in the video description. “Without PGF technology, such positions would be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to fire from.”
Vice’s Motherboard website compared the new technology with a jet’s heads-up display (HUD), a transparent display that allows pilots to read data without looking away from their normal view.“Much like a jet fighter's head's up display (HUD), TrackingPoint's wearable PGF app gives users the visual aids needed to take their aiming and shooting chops to previously impossible levels.”
Oren Schauble, Tracking Point’s director of marketing, told Motherboard in April, "Being able to shoot around corners and over hills is a little mind-blowing when you actually do it. Things keep on rolling."
The ShotView app works by streaming video from the tracking scope’s HUD to WiFi devices. “This enables direct device streaming for phones, tablets and many wearables. For additional networking, phones can connect via bluetooth and the Internet to share the apps data with additional devices,”the promotional video claims. Combining the PGF with Google Glass “allows for accurate shots around corners, from supported positions, behind-the-back, to the side and over barricades.”
The application is not available for the public yet, and a rep from the company told Huffington Post there are no plans to make the app available to consumers. Glass integration is still in the testing phase, Time reported.
The company began selling its (non-ShotView) PGFs to consumers in 2013. These rifles use a tracking scope and a guided trigger to allow users to reliably hit targets from 1,000 yards, according to their website. Their products have a variety of calibers, barrel lengths, chassis systems, applications and ammunitions.
Tracking Point already provides the US military with six of its so-called “smart” rifles, which come equipped with an internal computer system as well as sensors that gauge environmental factors to help a soldier aim. Google Glass is no stranger to the military, either, as a US Air Force research team is in the process of beta-testing Google Glass headsets for possible utilization in battlefield scenarios.

US Army testing precision guided ‘smart’ rifles - report

Tracking Point has announced that the military has purchased six of its so-called “smart” rifles, which are priced at between $10,000 and $27,000 each. That’s a hefty fee compared to the hundreds of dollars the Army pays to fit soldiers with the usual M-16 A2 rifle or M-4 Carbine, but the Tracking Point model reportedly comes fitted with aiming technology so advanced that the military may hope a $10,000 investment will help save money on ammunition.
The US military is investing in an advanced firearm that comes equipped with an internal computer system as well as sensors that gauge environmental factors to help a soldier aim, according to a technology startup known as Tracking Point.
A shooter using a smart sniper rifle would merely need to tag a target viewable on a screen that’s visible when they are looking through the gun’s scope. The internal computer system will then tell the shooter exactly how to hold the gun and when to press the trigger.
Tracking Point displayed the weapon at the annual SHOT show weapons convention in Las Vegas, Nevada, earlier this month. DefenseTech.com reported that US Army officials bought six of the precision-guided firearms.
Rifles can communicate with each other,” said Oren Schauble, a company marketing official. “We can enable a more information-driven combat in the sense that you can tag targets. You can pass off those targets to someone else with a scope. There’s a whole layer of communication that comes with having a rifle that can designate and track targets.”
Part of the motivation behind developing the precision-guided rifle, the company said, is that battlefields are becoming increasingly complex and, more importantly, connected. A Linux-powered computer in the gun scope collects ballistic data, battlefield images, and records atmospheric conditions such as cant, inclination, and even the tilt of the earth at that precise moment.
Schauble said the company has sold approximately 500 guns to a clientele that includes wealthy collectors and safari hunters.
The guns are also wireless, which means the footage and information can be live-streamed to a smart phone, tablet, or laptop.
The only way to guarantee accuracy is to control all the variables,” Scott Calvin, a Tracking Point representative, told Defense Tech. The only major factor that the gun cannot track is wind speed, which must be entered manually, Calvin added.
As with any new product that has its proponents, there are skeptics who assert that the technology has gone too far by eliminating the need for patience and calm in a high-pressure situation.
It’s the traditional shooting fish in a barrel or the sitting duck,” hunter Chris Wilbratte told NPR. “I mean, there’s no skill in it, right? It’s just you point, you let the weapon system do its thing and you pull the trigger and now you’ve killed a deer. There’s no skill.”
West Point military academy graduate and Vietnam War veteran Chris Frandsen said the Tracking Point gun should be prohibited in the civilian world because a criminal could use it and potentially remain undetected from a faraway distance.
Where we have mental health issues, where we have children that are disassociated from society early on, when we have terrorists who have political cards to play, we have to restrict weapons that make them more efficient in terrorizing the population,” he said.

Residents Hope to Commemorate Children after Mass Grave Find

Δημοσιεύτηκε στις 4 Ιουν 2014
Residents campaign for babies discovered in mass Irish grave to receive commemoration.

Full Story:

Local residents on Tuesday said they hoped a campaign is making headway to commemorate the unmarked mass grave of nearly 800 babies found in Tuam, County Galway, Ireland.

The burial site was discovered under concrete in 1975 by friends Barry Sweeney and Francis Hopkins when they were playing as children.

"It was just a concrete slab, it was cracked. Myself and Francis were in here and we pulled it open, cracked it open, and there it was - skulls piled up on top of each other. Maybe eight or nine feet deep piled up. So, we just being kids at the age we were, we just ran," Sweeney said.

"And at the time we didn't realise the magnitude of what was going on - we were kids," Hopkins added.

The infants were buried without coffins in the grounds of a former Bons Secours home for unmarried mothers between 1925 and 1961.

Local historian Catherine Corless said that before the discovery, there was nothing marking the buried remains.

"This is actually a whole mass grave and they are all buried around here in this area, and no little cross, no marking, no headstone. Nobody knows who they are or what they are," she said.

A total of 796 babies toddlers and children were buried in this mass grave. Death records show the children died from malnutrition and infectious disease.

A representative from the Catholic Archdiocese of Tuam, Father Fintan Monaghan, said that it was inappropriate to judge the past from today's standards.

"I suppose we can't really judge the, I suppose, the past from our point of view, or from our lens but all we can do is to mark it appropriately and to make sure there is a suitable place here where people can come and can remember the babies that died here," he said.

The Fundraising Committee plans to engrave in stone all 796 names of the children found buried here.

"These children have nothing over them and we're not prepared to stand here as women and let them happen," local resident Teresa Killeen Kelly said.

Irish broadcaster RTE says that a small financial donation has also now been made by the Bons Secours Sisters to help the community build a memorial.
