Micra Urban Crossover

Nissan Extrem: It’s a Micra Urban Crossover

The Nissan Extrem Concept has been revealed in Brazil as an urban crossover based on the Micra platform.
Photo of Nissan Extrem Concept in Brazil

Nissan has been talking about something exciting and new at the Sao Paulo Motor Show in Braizil, and this is it – the Nissan Extrem.
The Extrem is, say Nissan, an ‘Urban Rally Car’ designed to be a tough street fighter and penned by Nissan Design in San Diego specifically for the Brazilian market.
Based on the underpinnings of the Micra, the Extrem is 3850mm long and 1760mm wide and is, although it’s hard to judge in the photos, a chunk smaller than the Nissan’s current smallest crossover, the Juke.
Although the Extrem seems to be a mish-mash of Nissan styling cues it’s an appealing look; a proper little urban warrior on a smaller scale than usual, but is also has new elements – like the floating C-pillar and wraparound glass – that look new.
Power for the Extrem comes from Nissan’s DIG-T turbo 1.6 litre petrol engine and could be offered with a choice of FWD or 4WD with torque vectoring.
Nissan say the Extrem is just a concept, but with its funky looks and compact size it looks an ideal candidate to slip in below the Juke and boost sales of Nissan’s Micra range, which has been struggling.

Candice Swanepoel for Colcci Spring 2013: Summer Sexy and Surfer Cool at SPFW

SAO PAULO - While Colcci face and new mommy Alessandra Ambrosio was not in attendance this time around, a top model took her place at the Colcci show as the opening model on the runway. Like Ambrosio, that model was also a Victoria's Secret face. Candice Swanepoel started the show with a killer print peplum and crop top. She was followed by well-known Brazilian model Aline Weber in overalls with the same print. Besides the funky prints, there were also an explosion of mixed prints, bright colors, and sexy surfer appeal with blues relating to the sea and baggy looks that were both casual and glamorous.

Appearances: Candice Swanepoel, Aline Weber, Ana Claudia Michels, Barbara Fialho, Bruna Tenorio, Marcelia Freesz, Daiane Conterato, Debora Muller, Lais Ribeiro

ΕΚΡΗΞΕΙΣ ΤΟΥ ΗΛΙΟΥ

Here’s a mesmerizing video from the folks over at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center’s visualization studio showing the Sun in a whole new light… well, a reprocessed light anyway.
Using what’s called a gradient filter, images of the Sun can be adjusted to highlight the intricate details of its dynamic atmosphere. Magnetic activity that’s invisible to human vision can be brought into view, showing the powerful forces in play within the Sun’s corona and helping researchers better understand how it affects space weather. (Plus they sure are pretty!)
Compiled into a video, these images reveal the hidden beauty — and power — of our home star in action.

The Origin of Light

Felix Baumgartner's space leap - highlights

In a giant leap from more than 24 miles up, a daredevil skydiver shattered the sound barrier while making the highest jump ever - a tumbling, death-defying plunge from a balloon to a safe landing in the New Mexico desert.

Austrian Felix Baumgartner hit Mach 1.24, or 833.9 mph (1,342 kph) on Sunday 14 October , according to preliminary data, and became the first man to reach supersonic speed without travelling in a jet or a spacecraft after hopping out of a capsule that had reached an altitude of 128,100 feet (39,045 meters) above the Earth.

Landing on his feet in the desert, the man known as "Fearless Felix" lifted his arms in victory to the cheers of jubilant friends and spectators who closely followed his descent in a live television feed at the command centre.

A worldwide audience watched live on the Internet via cameras mounted on his capsule as Baumgartner, wearing a pressurised suit, stood in the doorway of his capsule, gave a thumbs-up and leapt into the stratosphere.

"The whole world is watching now. I wish it could see what I can see," said Felix, just before making the jump.

Baumgartner's descent lasted just over nine minutes, about half of it in a free fall.

Al Nusrah Front seizes Syrian base in joint operation with Free Syrian Army

Al Nusrah Front seizes Syrian base in joint operation with Free Syrian Army

The Al Nusrah Front for the People of the Levant, an al Qaeda-linked jihadist group that is fighting Bashir al Assad's regime in Syria, has seized control of an airbase near Aleppo in a joint operation with the supposedly secular Free Syrian Army. Video of the fighters at the airbase has appeared on the Internet.
The Al Nusrah Front and Free Syrian Army captured the airbase in al Ta'aneh near Aleppo yesterday after heavy fighting with the Syrian military. Scud tactical ballistic missiles as well as anti-aircraft missiles were housed at the airbase.
"A few hundred fighters from Jabhat al-Nusra, Fajr al-Islam and a few members of the FSA [Free Syrian Army] took part in the operation which lasted for more than five hours," according to a statement attributed to "Abu Firas of the Revolutionary Council in Aleppo" that accompanied the video posted on a YouTube site.
"The airbase was completely destroyed. The fighters were able to control the whole base after a long fight in which many Syrian soldiers killed, some fled, and others were captured," the statement continued. "The fighters have set up many checkpoints around the base and were able to confiscate 20 different rockets."
The Al Nusrah Front is known to conduct joint operations with the Free Syrian Army, the main group in Syria that is held up as the secular opposition to the Assad regime. In August, Al Nusrah said it attacked a police station outside of Damascus along with the Al Sahaba Battalion, a unit of the Free Syrian Army that operates in the capital. According to The Guardian, jihadist groups such as Al Nusrah have become more appealing to Syrian rebels as they are better organized and have expertise from waging jihad in Iraq and elsewhere, and have integrated their operations with the Free Syrian Army.
Background on Al Nusrah Front activity in Syria
The Al Nusrah Front has conducted numerous suicide attacks and complex military operations against the Syrian military over the past 10 months. Additionally, Al Nusrah has claimed credit for hundreds of conventional attacks.
The group has now claimed credit for 27 of the 34 suicide bombings in Syria that the The Long War Journal has tallied since December 2011. Since the end of August, Al Nusrah has claimed credit for launching nine suicide attacks. For more information on the suicide attacks in Syria, see LWJ reports,Suicide bombings become commonplace in Syria , and Al Nusrah Front claims 5 suicide attacks in Syria in past month.
The al Qaeda-linked group has conducted several sophisticated attacks in Syria since it announced its presence earlier this year. Al Nusrah has claimed it executed the June 1 suicide assault on the Syrian military at a camp in Idlib, as well as a complex attack at the airport at Abu Kamal on Sept. 4.
The last complex suicide attack occurred on Oct. 9, when Al Nusrah forces attacked the Air Force Intelligence branch in Harasta on the outskirts of Damascus. Two suicide bombers struck the base within 25 minutes of each other, then Al Nusrah fighters launched a mortar attack as recovery operations were underway. The previous complex attack took place on Sept. 26, when an assault team detonated a suicide car bomb outside the Army headquarters in central Damascus and a five-man team then entered the headquarters and battled with security guards. Also, on Oct. 3, Al Nusrah launched two suicide attacks and two car bomb attacks against different military targets in Aleppo.
Besides the Al Nusrah Front, other al Qaeda-affiliated groups, such as Al Qaeda in Iraq and the Abdullah Azzam Brigades, also operate in Syria. In addition, still other al Qaeda-style groups, such as the Al Baraa Ibn Malik Martyrdom Brigade, which has claimed that it will use suicide attacks, and theOmar al Farouq Brigade, have appeared in Syria as well.
Foreign jihadists have begun to pour into Syria to wage jihad against Assad's regime. Fighters from Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, LibyaEgypt, and the Palestinian Territories are known to have been killed in Syria.

Mullah Fazlullah ordered assassination of Pakistani schoolgirl

Mullah Fazlullah ordered assassination of Pakistani schoolgirl

pakistan_fazlullah.jpg
Mullah Qari Fazlullah.
Mullah Fazlullah, the emir of the Swat branch of the Movement Taliban in Pakistan (Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan, or TTP), ordered the assassination of Malala Yousafzai, a young schoolgirl in Swat who has spoken out against the terror group. Malala and two other girls were shot while on a bus in Swat on Oct. 9. From Dawn:
The Swat Taliban militia, known to work under the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) umbrella, has a force of around 100 men specialised in targeted killing, fighters said. They chose two men, aged between 20 to 30, who were locals from Swat Valley, Reuters quoted the fighters as saying.
"We had no intentions to kill her but were forced when she would not stop (speaking against us)," said spokesman Sirajuddin Ahmad, now based in Afghanistan's Kunar province.
Ahmed said the Taliban held a meeting a few months ago at which they unanimously agreed to kill her. The task was then given to military commanders to carry out.
In another report, the Associated Press quoted the spokesman as saying that the meeting of the Taliban leadership was held two months ago.
AP further quotes Sirajuddin Ahmed as saying that Malala Yousufzai was warned three times to stop her activities promoting "Western thinking," but she did not. The last warning was conveyed a week ago, Ahmed told an AP reporter.
....
"Before the attack, the two fighters personally collected information about Malala's route to school, timing, the vehicle she used and her security," Reuters quoted Ahmed as saying.
They decided to shoot her near a military checkpoint to make the point they could strike anywhere, he said.
On Tuesday, the two men stopped the bus she was riding home in. They asked for Yousufzai by name. Although the frightened girls said she wasn't there, the men fired at her and also hit two other girls in the van. One of them remains in critical condition.
Now that they had failed to kill Yousufzai, they would target her father, Ahmad told Reuters.
Ziauddin Yousufzai, the headmaster of a girls' school, is on their hit list for speaking against them, his activities to promote peace in the region and for encouraging his daughter.
"We have a clear-cut stance. Anyone who takes side with the government against us will have to die at our hands," Ahmad warned. "You will see. Other important people will soon become victims."
Several hours later on the day of the attack, Ihsanullah Ihsan, the top spokesman for the Movement Taliban in Pakistan, took credit for the attempt to murder Malala, in an email received by The Long War Journal. The Oct. 9 email, titled "Important Clarification," is reproduced in full, and unedited, below [emphasis added]. Ihsan tries to justify the assassination by claiming that Malala opposed sharia, or Islamic law, and that accordingly her assassination was "obligatory" under Islamic law.
TTP successfully targeted Malala Yousafzai in Mingora, although she was young and a girl and TTP does not believe in attacking on women, but whom so ever leads campaign against Islam & Shariah is Ordered to be killed by Shariah.
When its a matter of Shariah, and someone tries to bring fitnah with his/her activities, and it involves in leading a campaign against shariah and tries to involve whole community in such campaign, and that personality become a symbol of anti shariah campaign, not just its allowed to kill such person but its Obligatory in Islam.
If anyone Argues about her so young age , then the Story of Hazrat Khizar in Quran that relates that Hazrat Khizar while Traveling with Prophet Musa (AS) killed a child, arguing about the reason of his killing he said that the parents of this child are Pious and in future he will cause bad name for them.
If anyone argues that she was female, then we can see the incident of killing of wife by a blind Companion of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.W) because she use to say insultive words for prophet. And prophet praised this act.
Its a clear command of shariah that any female, that by any means play role in war against mujahideen, should be killed. Malala Yousafzai was playing a vital role in bucking up the emotions of Murtad army and Government of Pakistan, and was inviting muslims to hate mujahideen.
Tehrik taliban's crime wasn't that they banned education for girls, instead our crime is that we tried to bring Education system for both boys and girls under shariah. We are deadly against co-education and secular education syestem, and shriah orders us to be against it.
If anyone thinks thinks that Malala is targeted because of education, that's absolutely wrong, and a propaganda of Media, Malala is targeted because of her pioneer role in preaching secularism and so called enlightened moderation. And whom so ever will commit so in future too will be targeted again by TTP.
After this incident Media pour out all of its smelly propaganda against Taliban mujahideen with their poisonous tounges, they are shouting that malala has suffered tyranny like there is no else in the country whom is facing same. Were our sister in lal masjid whom were bombed, gassed and burnt to death, were not humans?? and the sinless women and children of swat , bajour, mohmand, orakzai, & Wazeeristan whom suffered inhumane bombardments by Murtad army don't qualify to bestow mercy upon them?
Will the blind media pay any attention to Hundreds of Respectful sisters whom are in secret detention centers of ISI and MI and suffering by their captives? Will you like to put an eye on more then three thousand young men whom are killed in secret detention centers and their bodies are found in different areas of swat, claimed to be killed in encounters and died by Cardiac Arrest??
Gain Conscious, Otherwise............
From: Ihsan-ullah-Ihsan
Central Spokesman TTP
The Pakistani media and a good number of Pakistanis are outraged by the attempted murder of Malala, and many believe this incident may in fact be the tipping point against the Taliban. But don't count on it.
The Movement of the Taliban in Pakistan has conducted numerous atrocities in Pakistan (and in neighboring Afghanistan), including the public beatings and executions of women, mass-executions of policemen and soldiers, suicide bombings inside mosques and at markets and other public places, and other such attacks. These incidents sometimes spark temporary outrage, but often are responded to with indifference or even apathy. Like them, the Malala assassination attempt will very likely fade from the consciousness of Pakistanis, while the drone strikes, which are often directed against Movement of the Taliban in Pakistan leaders such as Fazlullah and his boss, Hakeemullah Mehsud, will remain a hot-button issue.

Aurora alert for night of October 13, 2012

Aurora alert for night of October 13, 2012

Geomagnetic storm that spawned auroras in early morning hours today is still underway. Auroras or northern lights likely for those at northerly latitudes tonight!
Early this morning – October 13, 2012 – a flurry of aurora photos appeared on the EarthSky Facebook page from friends at northerly latitudes. A geomagnetic storm had began, which is still underway. There are bright auroras appearing around the Arctic Circle, and in Scandinavia, Greenland, Canada, and several northern states in the U.S., according to the website spaceweather.com, which also said:
NOAA forecasters estimate a 40% chance of continued storms on October 14-15 in response to a high-speed stream of solar wind.
If you live at a northerly latitude, watch for auroras tonight!
EarthSky Facebook friend Colin Chatfield in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada took this photo of the aurora in the early morning hours of October 13, 2012. More images from Colin here.
Our friend Colin Chatfield, who captured the image of this morning’s aurora, said:
This is from my backyard around 5 a.m. this morning (October 13, 2012) in Saskatoon, SK, Canada. Never have I seen the aurora so bright, especially from within the city. They were astounding, with purple visible to the naked eye. Taken with a Canon 7D and Tokina 10-17mm f/3.5 fisheye at 10mm, ISO 800, 20 sec exp, f/3.5
Aurora of October 13, 2012 from our friend Joe Joe Prince in Bethal, Alaska.
Aurora of October 13, 2012 from our friend Ed Nephler in Bliss, Michigan.
Aurora of October 13, 2012 from our friend Steven Benbo in northern Minnesota.
Bottom line: The geomagnetic storm that produced dazzling auroras at northerly latitudes on the morning of October 13, 2012 is still going on. Expect auroras tonight as well, seen from northern parts of the globe.

Dakota Pathways: People of the Bison

Dakota Pathways: A History was a 20-part series used by Educator's across South Dakota for use in their classrooms. The 14 minute long segments explore some of the history of South Dakota. People of the Bison is the 9th segment produced in the series.

I found myself sitting in a park on a cold October day. The leaves on the trees were full of color. Yellow trees to my left, red trees to my right, and a mosaic of colors on the ground. The grass was a deep green color, at least the areas not covered by leaves. The swimming pool was drained and winterized, and the park benches were all placed in the closest shelter house.

The playground equipment was different too. The swing sets looked empty, because the swings were taken off for the winter. Springs were stripped of their horses so they would not crack during the cold winter. I didn't need bug spray since it was too cold for mosquitoes or gnats to bother me. The most important part of the park was also missing, the kids. I didn't notice any laughter or tears, no cuts or scrapes, no running or tag, no swimming or hugs, no friends and no fun. As I walked though the leaves, I uncovered a flower protected by warmth, a reminder of the past season and a glimpse of the future of good things to come when the seasons do change.

Years ago bison covered the plains similar to new leaves on a spring tree. They migrated with the seasonal change. They traveled north of The Black Hills during the summer and south of the Black Hills during the winter. The movement of Native Americans coincided with the bison migration. The Indians main source of food was the bison. The Indians used every part of the bison because they respected the animal and considered it very sacred. They used the meat for food, the hide for warmth, the stomach to hold water and the bones for tools and arrows. The survival and livelihood of the Indians depended on the availability of the bison. The number of bison during the 1600s was very abundant. It is estimated that during the early 1600s there were 30 to 60 million buffalo.

There is an old saying that all good things come to an end. Unfortunately, this was true for the Indians. No one ever imagined the buffalo would almost become extinct by 1890. Just as leaves fall from the trees before winter, the buffalo were disappearing from the grassy plains. There was an increase in demand for the fur of the buffalo. Millions of animals were slaughtered during the 1800s. The livelihood of the Indians as they knew it was gone. The United States Government set up agencies on reservations where the Indians could receive clothing, food, and shelter. Even the people of Crazy Horse and Red Cloud had to come to lands set-aside for them. It was either that, or starvation.

As for the people a hundred years ago who perhaps thought reservations were places where American Indians would drop their traditional ways...history proved them wrong. Just like we have seen an increase in the population of buffalo today, we see old Indian traditions still celebrated on reservations. Just like the bison, the people of the bison are forever part of South Dakota.

Turkish F16s intercept Syrian civilian flight from Moscow to Damascus

Turkish F16 fighter jets forced a Syrian airline passenger plane to land in Ankara over suspicions it was carrying "non-civilian" cargo, says the Turkish Foreign Ministry. The Damascus-bound plane, which had departed from Moscow, is being inspected.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu says Ankara received intelligence that the Syrian plane was carrying "non-civilian" cargo, but refused to comment on the presumed content.
Earlier, Turkish media speculated that the plane was diverted on suspicions that it might be transporting heavy weapons.
The plane was forced to land in Ankara’s international airport at 5:15 pm local time. The Airbus A-320 was carrying 35 passengers.
The Airbus was intercepted on its way from Moscow by F-16 jets as it entered Turkish airspace. A Turkish Foreign Ministry official confirmed that a Syrian plane was forced to land at the capital's Esenboga Airport, and that authorities were "inspecting the plane'', but would not provide further information.
Turkey is determined to stop any transfer of weapons to Syrian administration through its airspace, the Foreign Ministry said Wednesday.
"All civilian flights in Syrian airspace have been stopped since it is no longer safe," the ministry also added in a statement, as quoted by the Hurriyet Daily News.
Syrian authorities have not yet commented on the reports.
Tensions between Turkey and Syria have escalated since a Syrian shell killed five civilians in the border town of Akcakale last week.

Zugspitze - Germany, Austria HD

The Zugspitze, southwest of Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Bavaria, Germany, is with a height 9718 ft of height the highest mountain of Germany. The borderline between Germany and Austria runs across the western summit.
The summit can be reached by three cableways, the Tyrolean Zugspitze Railway and the Eibsee Cable Car. You can also use the Bavarian Zugspitze Railway, a track railway that runs through the mountains on the so called Zugspitzplatt. The Zugspitzplatt is a plateau developed as the ski area. From there, a third cable car takes you to the summit.
The Schneefernerhaus which serves mainly as meteorological research station lies clearly visibly between Zugspitzplatt and the peak. The Northern Schneeferner, the Southern Schneeferner and the Höllentalferner are the three glaciers of the Zugspitze massif. On beautiful days you have a distant view of up to 105 miles. From the bird's-eye view the Bavarian lake Eibsee appears like a tropical paradise.

Battle For Syria - Trailer of 28 minute report

It is a dirty war of vigilante justice, rag-tag militias and indiscriminate bombing of civilians. This stunning and intimate film gets right into the stark reality of the frontline battle for Syria.

In a shot out car a dead man lays across his wife in a hopeless attempt to save her. The rebels, led here by Abu Muhammad, a former army colonel, thought they had cleared the snipers from this area. But they were wrong. His men are immensely brave and committed, but also undisciplined: "The problem is they don't follow directions, if they follow 15% of the plan that's great!" With the government unwilling to engage in direct conflict with the rebels, for fear that those in the lower ranks will defect, snipers have become key to their strategy and leave a trail of dead bodies, young and old, in their wake. However, it's not just the government who are guilty of excesses. When the rebels capture a civilian trying to sell information to the army, they torture him for two hours, despite Abu Muhammad's assertion he will get a fair trial after the conflict. But Abu Muhammad has greater worries. His group are low on ammunition and believe they can only win through "casualties and a willingness to die". Their current "marriage of convenience" with Islamic fundamentalists also worries him. What will they do if they hijack the revolution? "The real battle for Syria begins after victory. We will fight anyone who tries to turn our country into an extreme Islamic state."

led the way from the beginning of the section. I had to blaze a path and my weight rested on the establishment of the first track. This demanding task both physically and mentally. Rally in Egypt is very heavy, we race on the second and even the best make mistakes. I'm avoiding them. Tomorrow I take part in a good position as far as I'm comfortable position, I have to ride my own pace latest OS, so as not to stand out from the rhythm and not lose concentration - commented Przygoński Cuba.
Jacek Czachor the term came from the sixth episode time. Tomorrow ORLEN Team captain, despite many hours ahead of the next player in the class of OPEN Trophy, does not intend to slow down.
Certainly not fire you tomorrow, I have to be careful not to strain the engine. I want to take advantage of this rally of training and build the best possible form.Today was quite a difficult stage, the end is incredibly demanding passage through kopny fesz-fesz. The main thing that I did not commit any error navigation, most of the phase I'm going by myself and I have to be very focused on this aspect - said Jacek Czachor.
The last stage of the rally consists of 425 km. Tomorrow we will know the winners of the titles: World Champion and Open Trophy.

The Taliban's War on Women - Afghanistan

The recent online video of the Taliban executing a 22-year-old woman in front of a crowd of cheering men shocked the world. As Taliban aggression intensifies, how much has actually changed in Afghanistan?

At the height of the Taliban's rule in Afghanistan in 1999, a burqa-clad woman was executed in Kabul's main football stadium. Footage of the killing shocked the world and galvanised international opposition to the Taliban's brutal rule. Yet just two months ago, 22-year-old Najiba was mercilessly killed by the Taliban, just one hour's drive from Kabul. The Taliban created a fake court and once they decided she was guilty, executed her within an hour. "It was tyrannical and barbaric - it is impossible that the law would allow what they did", says Mullah Badam, who witnessed the killing. Speaking to Afghan women it's evident that violent abuse is still commonplace. 18-year-old Mumtaz had acid thrown on her face by her would-be husband, who she had refused to marry. "They would not let me look in the mirror. I cried a lot", she says. But there are women who are fighting back, including MP Fawzia Koofi, who plans to take on Hamid Karzai for the presidency. An outspoken champion of women's rights, she has faced assassination attempts and numerous death threats. She argues that for her male political opposition, "women's rights are a matter of sacrifice". With the Allied forces set to withdraw by 2014, this disturbing report highlights just how precarious the situation remains for the future of Afghan society.

Curiosity Finds River Rocks and River Beds on Mars

NASA's Curiosity rover mission has found evidence a stream once flowed across the area on Mars where the rover is driving. There is earlier evidence for the presence of water on Mars, but this evidence -- images of rocks containing ancient streambed gravels -- is the first of its kind.

Scientists are studying the images of stones cemented into a layer of conglomerate rock. The sizes and shapes of stones offer clues to the speed and distance of a long-ago stream's flow.

The sizes and shapes of stones offer clues to the speed and distance of a long-ago stream's flow.

"From the size of gravels it carried, we can interpret the water was moving about 3 feet per second, with a depth somewhere between ankle and hip deep," said Curiosity science co-investigator William Dietrich of the University of California, Berkeley. "Plenty of papers have been written about channels on Mars with many different hypotheses about the flows in them. This is the first time we're actually seeing water-transported gravel on Mars. This is a transition from speculation about the size of streambed material to direct observation of it."

The finding site lies between the north rim of Gale Crater and the base of Mount Sharp, a mountain inside the crater. Earlier imaging of the region from Mars orbit allows for additional interpretation of the gravel-bearing conglomerate. The imagery shows an alluvial fan of material washed down from the rim, streaked by many apparent channels, sitting uphill of the new finds.

The rounded shape of some stones in the conglomerate indicates long-distance transport from above the rim, where a channel named Peace Vallis feeds into the alluvial fan.

The abundance of channels in the fan between the rim and conglomerate suggests flows continued or repeated over a long time, not just once or for a few years.

The discovery comes from examining two outcrops, called "Hottah" and "Link," with the telephoto capability of Curiosity's mast camera during the first 40 days after landing. Those observations followed up on earlier hints from another outcrop, which was exposed by thruster exhaust as Curiosity, the Mars Science Laboratory Project's rover, touched down.

The gravels in conglomerates at both outcrops range in size from a grain of sand to a golf ball. Some are angular, but many are rounded.

"The shapes tell you they were transported and the sizes tell you they couldn't be transported by wind. They were transported by water flow," said Curiosity science co-investigator Rebecca Williams of the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Ariz.

The science team may use Curiosity to learn the elemental composition of the material, which holds the conglomerate together, revealing more characteristics of the wet environment that formed these deposits.

The stones in the conglomerate provide a sampling from above the crater rim, so the team may also examine several of them to learn about broader regional geology.

The slope of Mount Sharp in Gale Crater remains the rover's main destination. Clay and sulfate minerals detected there from orbit can be good preservers of carbon-based organic chemicals that are potential ingredients for life.
