A Taliban stronghold in the Charkh District, just an hour outside Kabul, has become a microcosm of Taliban rule in Afghanistan. Though only an hour from Kabul, armed Taliban patrol the streets openly and have built a parallel administration in Charkh, including Islamic law courts and girls schools.Nagieb Khaja reports from the Taliban stronghold of Charkh, Logar Province. Khaja bears witness to the parallel administration the Taliban have built in Charkh, and hears testimony from the population—including from the families of civilian casualties of Afghan National Army bombings.Khaja is the first Western journalist to film a Taliban Islamic law court where he witnesses a case in which the defendant is a Taliban member. The outcome is surprising.Khaja also visits local boys and girls schools run in concert with the Taliban."This is Taliban Country" shows a defiant Taliban determined to continue attacking the Afghan National Army bases and keep control of the region.

Αυτό είναι το αυτοκίνητο που σηματοδοτεί την επιστροφή του "λέοντα" στο πιο σκληρό ράλι του κόσμου.

Η Peugeot αποκάλυψε το 2008 DKR, το αυτοκίνητο με το οποίο θα πάρει μέρος στο Ράλι Ντακάρ.

Το αυτοκίνητο, ντυμένο στα χρώματα της Total και της Red Bull που είναι οι δύο βασικοί χορηγοί της ομάδας θα διεκδικήσει τη νίκη στο Ντακάρ του 2015, στις δύσκολες και απαιτητικές ειδικές διαδρομές της Αργεντινής, της Χιλής και της Βολιβίας.


 

Στόχος της Peugeot είναι να χτυπήσει την πρωτοκαθεδρία της ΜΙΝΙ που τα τελευταία χρόνια έχει μπει πολύ δυνατά στον συγκεκριμένο αγώνα. Η Peugeot βέβαια κάθε άλλο παρά παρθένα είναι στο συγκεκριμένο αγώνα, έχοντας στο παρελθόν συμματάσχει και κερδίσει με τα 205 Τ16 (1987-1988) και 405 Τ16 (1989-1990).

Όπως είναι ήδη γνωστό τα 2008 DKR θα οδηγήσουν οι Carlos Sainz και Cyril Despres, με τον πρώτο να έχει σημαντική εμπειρία από τον συγκεκριμένο αγώνα και τον δεύτερο να είναι η πρώτη φορά που θα οδηγήσει όχημα με τέσσερις τροχούς, αφού μετρά μπόλικες συμμετοχές και πέντε νίκες στο Ντακάρ ως αναβάτης της ΚΤΜ.



Το τρίτο αυτοκίνητο της ομάδας δεν έχει ακόμη γίνει γνωστό ποιος θα το οδηγεί. Εχουν ακουστεί τα ονόματα των Stephane Peterhansel (πολυνίκης και με μοτοσικλέτα και με αυτοκίνητο) και του Sébastien Loeb. Ωστόσο ο πρώτος δεσμεύεται ακόμη με συμβόλαιο με τη ΜΙΝΙ, ενώ ο δεύτερος παρότι οδήγησε Peugeot στο Pikes Peak, δεσμεύεται και αυτός με συμβόλαιο με την "αδελφή" Citroën για το πρωτάθλημα τουWTCC

Στελέχη της Peugeot Sport ξεκαθάρισαν πως η εμπλοκή στο Ντακάρ θα έχει βάθος χρόνου, με τονMaxime Picat να μιλά για νίκη από την πρώτη κιόλας χρονιά.

Πρόκειται για το κεντρικό μέρος βυζαντινού τρίπτυχου από ελεφαντόδοντο, των μέσων του 10ου αι., που απεικονίζει τη Σταύρωση του Σωτήρα και προέρχεται μάλλον από την Κωνσταντινούπολη. Τα δύο πλαϊνά φύλλα έχουν χαθεί, αλλά αρχικά έκλειναν και κάλυπταν το κεντρικό μέρος. Το ανάγλυφο της παράστασης είναι τόσο βαθύ, ώστε κάνει την παράσταση να φαίνεται σχεδόν τρισδιάστατη. Εντός περίτεχνου ναΐσκου εικονίζονται ο Εσταυρωμένος Χριστός, η Θεοτόκος και ο Ιωάννης σε θρηνητικές στάσεις, δύο Άγγελοι και οι Ρωμαίοι στρατιώτες κατά τη στιγμή του διαμερισμού των ενδυμάτων. Αν και αυτές οι μορφές είναι συνήθεις στη παράσταση της Σταύρωσης στη βυζαντινή τέχνη, ο ανακλινόμενος γενειοφόρος άνδρας που είναι καρφωμένος κάτω από τον Σταυρό βρίσκεται μόνο σε αυτό το ελεφαντόδοντο.
Η επιγραφή που βρίσκεται από πάνω Ο ΣΤ(ΑΥ)ΡΟΣ ΕΝΠΑΓΗΣ ΕΝ ΤΗ ΚΟΙΛΙΑ ΤΟΥ ΑΔΟΥ τον ταυτοποιεί με τον Άδη και είναι μία οπτική επιβεβαίωση της πίστης ότι με τη Σταύρωσή Του ο Χριστός νίκησε τον θάνατο.

A movie of weather over Europe during March 2014, with audio commentary from Mark Higgins, Educator and Trainer at EUMETSAT.

The 'Natural Colour RGB' images used in the movie are taken from EUMETSAT's Meteosat-10 satellite in geostationary orbit 36,000 km above the Earth. The Natural Colour RGB product makes use of three solar channels: VIS0.6, VIS0.8 and NIR1.6. In this colour scheme vegetation appears greenish because of its large reflectance in the VIS0.8 channel (the green beam) compared to the NIR1.6 (red beam) and VIS0.6 (blue beam) channels.

Water clouds with small droplets have large reflectance at all three channels and hence appear whitish, while snow and ice clouds appears cyan because ice strongly absorbs in NIR1.6 (no red).

Bare ground appears brown because of the larger reflectance in the NIR1.6 than at VIS0.6, and the ocean appears black because of the low reflectance in all three channels.

With their flashy graphics, angular silhouettes, aggressive component choices, and 120-180mm of travel, Haibike had some of the most eye-catching bikes at last month’s Winter Bike PressCamp.  But it wasn’t the colours that had attendees talking; it was the motors.  Built around 250W Bosch electric drive systems (350W in the US), the bikes’ drivetrains amplify the rider’s pedaling input by 50-275%, making short work of uphills.

With their jackshaft-enhanced four-bar suspension design and travel-appropriate component spec, the Pro-level Haibike models on show certainly looked the part.  The NDURO Pro shown here has a lustworthy SRAM XX1 drivetrain, Fox 36 Talas fork and Float X shock, and Mavic Crossmax Enduro wheelset.  Given that a motor and battery are thrown in, the £6,000/$8,600 price almost seems reasonable.

But who are they for?

The president of US distributor Currie Technologies, Larry Pizzi, was adamant that adding a motor to a bike does not a motorbike make.  The company sees e-bikes as a way for mountain bikers to share the sport they love with those who, for reasons of age, illness, or lack of time, cannot currently participate in the sport.  From his perspective, e-bikes give those riders the boost they need to join us on the trails.

But are 5-8in motorised full-sussers really being targeted at the aged and infirm?

While e-bikes up to a certain output are in many places lumped in with bicycles in terms of (lack of) licensing, on the trail things are a bit fuzzier.  Though e-bike output and speeds are capped in both Europe and the US, given the electronics and mountain bike communities’ propensity for tinkering there’s little reason to think that factory limits will stand.  After all, here in the States it’s difficult to find a motorbike with its factory emissions or noise controls in place.  Given the challenges in gaining and maintaining trail access, an informal poll of attendees found many conflicted about (or outright hostile to) the idea of e-bikes on non-motorised trails.

IMBA, for its part, has issued a position paperdrawing a firm line between muscle-powered and motorised vehicles, with e-bikes on the motorised side.  The organisation only supports “the use of e-Bikes anywhere that [it] could also support other motorised uses.”  In the UK, e-bikes limited to 250W and 15mph (such as those shown by Haibike) are currently legal on those public rights of way open to bicycles.

The people bringing e-bikes to market seem truly to believe that their efforts will introduce more riders to the sport while extending existing riders’ careers.  During our discussion with Pizzi, we found our impulse to limit e-bikes to motorised trails in the uncomfortable position of being portrayed as exclusionary and elitist.  His position was that that mountain biking would only benefit from broadening its self-image and broadening its user base.

While there may well be a ‘we were here first’ aspect to many mountain bikers’ negative reactions and a desire to defend the physical aspects of the sport, the discomfort among PressCamp attendees to calling anything with a motor of any type or output a “bicycle” suggests that off-road e-bikes will likely not be met with open arms.

While the debate is likely to continue for some time, from a technical perspective the Haibike range is impressive.  Some narrow bars aside, the e-models ride well and seem well suited to their intended use.  After all, it’s hard not to enjoy the feeling of having one’s effort multiplied by nearly a factor of four and the low positioning of the weighty Bosch battery and motor assemblies does wonders for the e-bikes’ handling.

But we found ourselves asking: are e-bikes a gateway drug for mountain biking or for motorbiking?
