Kepler Discovers First Earth-size Planet in the Habitable Zone of Anothe...

Using NASA's Kepler Space Telescope, astronomers have discovered the first Earth-size planet orbiting a star in the "habitable zone" -- the range of distance from a star where liquid water might pool on the surface of an orbiting planet. The discovery of Kepler-186f confirms that planets the size of Earth exist in the habitable zone of stars other than our sun.
While planets have previously been found in the habitable zone, they are all at least 40 percent larger in size than Earth and understanding their makeup is challenging. Kepler-186f is more reminiscent of Earth.
"The discovery of Kepler-186f is a significant step toward finding worlds like our planet Earth," said Paul Hertz, NASA's Astrophysics Division director at the agency's headquarters in Washington. "Future NASA missions, like the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite and the James Webb Space Telescope, will discover the nearest rocky exoplanets and determine their composition and atmospheric conditions, continuing humankind's quest to find truly Earth-like worlds."
Although the size of Kepler-186f is known, its mass and composition are not. Previous research, however, suggests that a planet the size of Kepler-186f is likely to be rocky.
"We know of just one planet where life exists -- Earth. When we search for life outside our solar system we focus on finding planets with characteristics that mimic that of Earth," said Elisa Quintana, research scientist at the SETI Institute at NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif., and lead author of the paper published today in the journal Science. "Finding a habitable zone planet comparable to Earth in size is a major step forward."
Kepler-186f resides in the Kepler-186 system, about 500 light-years from Earth in the constellation Cygnus. The system is also home to four companion planets, which orbit a star half the size and mass of our sun. The star is classified as an M dwarf, or red dwarf, a class of stars that makes up 70 percent of the stars in the Milky Way galaxy.
"M dwarfs are the most numerous stars," said Quintana. "The first signs of other life in the galaxy may well come from planets orbiting an M dwarf."
Kepler-186f orbits its star once every 130-days and receives one-third the energy from its star that Earth gets from the sun, placing it nearer the outer edge of the habitable zone. On the surface of Kepler-186f, the brightness of its star at high noon is only as bright as our sun appears to us about an hour before sunset.
"Being in the habitable zone does not mean we know this planet is habitable. The temperature on the planet is strongly dependent on what kind of atmosphere the planet has," said Thomas Barclay, research scientist at the Bay Area Environmental Research Institute at Ames, and co-author of the paper. "Kepler-186f can be thought of as an Earth-cousin rather than an Earth-twin. It has many properties that resemble Earth."
The four companion planets, Kepler-186b, Kepler-186c, Kepler-186d, and Kepler-186e, whiz around their sun every four, seven, 13, and 22 days, respectively, making them too hot for life as we know it. These four inner planets all measure less than 1.5 times the size of Earth.
The next steps in the search for distant life include looking for true Earth-twins -- Earth-size planets orbiting within the habitable zone of a sun-like star -- and measuring the their chemical compositions. The Kepler Space Telescope, which simultaneously and continuously measured the brightness of more than 150,000 stars, is NASA's first mission capable of detecting Earth-size planets around stars like our sun.
Ames is responsible for Kepler's ground system development, mission operations, and science data analysis. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., managed Kepler mission development. Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp. in Boulder, Colo., developed the Kepler flight system and supports mission operations with the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at the University of Colorado in Boulder. The Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore archives, hosts and distributes Kepler science data. Kepler is NASA's 10th Discovery Mission and was funded by the agency's Science Mission Directorate.
The SETI Institute is a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to scientific research, education and public outreach.  The mission of the SETI Institute is to explore, understand and explain the origin, nature and prevalence of life in the universe.

A wounded lion almost had her leg ripped off when a male buffalo gored her. Emergency vets scrambled to the middle of the Masai Mara Nature Reserve in Kenya when they heard about Siena's life threatening injuries. Staff at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust -- a specialist elephant rehabilitation centre -- had to act quickly if they were to save the lioness on April 4. Dj Njoroge from the Kenyan Wildlife Trust was flown from Nairobi to the nature reserve where the injured lioness stood with her cubs.

Iranian Man Spared Execution at Last Second By Victim's Mother

PHOTO: The mother, right, of Abdolah Hosseinzadeh, who was murdered in 2007, removes the noose with the help of her husband from around the neck of Balal, who killed her son, during the execution ceremony in Nowshahr, April 15, 2014.
A man’s life was spared at the last second in Iran after the mother of a man he murdered halted his public execution.
Balal, with a noose tight around his neck, was awaiting death by hanging for the 2007 murder of 18-year-old Abdollah Hosseinzadeh when the victim’s mother had a change of heart, according to The Guardian.
The woman reportedly slapped the blind-folded Balal in the face before her husband helped her remove the noose, in front of a shocked crowd in Nowshahr, Iran on Tuesday.
"I am a believer,” said the victim’s mother, Samereh Alinejad, according to Agence France-Presse. “I had a dream in which my son told me that he was at peace and in a good place … After that, all my relatives, even my mother, put pressure on me to pardon the killer."

Balal, who killed Abdolah Hosseinzadeh in a street fight with a knife in 2007, reacts as he stands in the gallows during his execution ceremony in Nowshahr, Iran, April 15, 2014. Samereh Alinejad, the mother of Abdolah Hosseinzadeh spared the life of Balal, her son's convicted murderer, with an emotional slap in the face as he awaited execution prior to removing the noose around his neck.
Balal is accused of stabbing her son to death in a street fight.
Dramatic photos taken by Arash Khamooshi of the Isna news agency show the woman approaching Balal and later crying with his mother.
Alinejad and her husband were originally supposed to kick the chair on which Balal stood, The Guardian reported.
There were at least 369 executions in Iran last year and possibly hundreds more that weren’t reported, according to Amnesty International’s 2013 report on death sentences and executions.
That’s an 18 percent increase from 2012, according to the group.
Iran has the highest number of executions of any country in the world, excluding China, which won’t release that data, according to Amnesty International.

The Heartbreaking Truth About Yemen's Child Brides

More than 40% of marriages in Yemen's poorest areas are celebrated with girls younger than 15. Subjected to sexual violence, many die as a result of internal bleeding, childbirth, or attempt suicide.

"It's destiny. People marry young girls all the time", says the father of Jamila who was sold to marriage aged 12 to resolve a debt issue. In one of the world's most conservative countries, a strict interpretation of Islam dictates people's lives. Poverty, mass unemployment, a culture of glorifying the beauty of young girls, lack of a legal framework, and increasingly, marriage tourism from the Gulf, makes the work of human rights advocates difficult. In Al-Qaeda's last stronghold, child brides are also a political issue: "It has been proposed by the UN who wish to impose their laws on the whole world", argues Abdelmalik al-Taji, a professor of Islamic Law. According to him, when a body of a girl reaches maturity it is ready for marriage, even at the age of 10. Meanwhile, a doctor relates a case of a 14 year old who was rushed to the hospital on her wedding night. A case of Severe bleeding caused by a tear in her vagina led to her death. Aisha, who describes her wedding night as the biggest shock of her life, drank rat poison to escape her abusive husband: "I wanted to free myself from it all".

Al Qaeda weapons ship docks in Aden

Posted: 14 Apr 2014 11:52 AM PDT
According to a local Yemeni newspaper, on April 11 al Qaeda militants sailed a ship loaded with weapons into the country's southern port in Aden. Clashes erupted between the militants and security personel from the Yemeni anti-smuggling unit when the boat docked in Aden and the militants began offloading the weapons from the boat. The militants violently engaged the security personnel and then managed to escape by reboarding the ship and setting sail.
Boats belonging to the Yemeni coast guard and navy attempted to follow the ship but apparently lost its trail. According to sources, two militants were killed by Yemeni security forces; it is unclear whether they were killed in the initial clashes at the port of Aden or during the maritime chase.
Two days earlier, on April 9, the Yemeni Interior Ministry had warned in a memo to security services in the coastal provinces that a ship belong to al Qaeda thought to be carrying weapons had departed Djibouti the night before. At the time it was believed that the ship was headed to one of Yemen's ports and was manned by militants hailing from Yemen's eastern Hadramout province.
In related news, on April 12 one Yemeni soldier was killed and another injured when militants attacked a vehicle carrying military salaries in the city of Tarim in central Hadramout. After what eyewitnesses described as an ambush by al Qaeda militants, fighting broke out between the soldiers in the car and the attackers.
During the Arab Spring protests against the rule of former president Ali Abdallah Saleh in 2011-2012, al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) took advantage of turmoil in the country to seize control of vast areas in Yemen's south, including Hadramout. Although the Yemeni military launched a successful counteroffensive to recapture territory back from the terrorist organization in mid-2012, AQAP's networks and militants have not been completely cleared from those areas and are known to operate in Hadramout and other southern provinces.

Last week, I reported on a public message from several prominent jihadist ideologues to Ayman al Zawahiri. The ideologues want Zawahiri to issue a statement that more directly condemns the Islamic State of Iraq and the Sham (ISIS). The signatories quickly took to Twitter to post the message and build support for it. They have continued to do so.
Yesterday, Abdallah Muhammad al Muhaysini, a popular al Qaeda-linked Saudi cleric, tweeted the message above. Muhaysini calls on supporters to retweet the message, with an associated hashtag, "so that everyone will see the extent of the demand and so that the call is conveyed." The hashtag says the message is from the Ummah, or community of worldwide Muslims, to the leader of the Ummah, Ayman al Zawahiri. (Of course, the notion that Zawahiri is the leader of some unified Muslim community is ridiculous.)
Muhaysini and the others want Zawahiri to "direct general guidance to the mujahideen" in Syria, in addition to issuing a more pointed condemnation of ISIS.
Thus far, more than 850 people have retweeted Muhaysini's message.

On April 12, the Ibn Taymiyyah Media Center (ITMC), a jihadist media unit, confirmed the death of Israeli Arab Hussein Othman Masarwa. In a series of tweets the ITMC, known for publishing statements from the Mujahideen Shura Council in the Environs of Jerusalem, said that Masarwa had died a few days earlier in Syria.
The tweets did not specify how Masarwa died or the group he had been fighting for. According to press reports, Masarwa had been in Syria for about two years prior to his death.
It is currently unclear whether Hussein Othman Masarwa, originally from Tayibe, Israel, is related to Hikmat Masarwa, also from Tayibe. In April 2013, Hikmat Masrawa was arrested after returning from Syria, where Israeli authorities said he had received military training from Syria opposition members. According to some reports, Hikmat had received training from "global jihad fighters." In July 2013, Hikmat, who said he had gone to Syria to find his brother, accepted a plea bargain.
Reliable figures on the number of Israeli Arabs who are fighting or have fought in the ongoing Syrian conflict are hard to come by. According to one report, the number is between 15 and 20. In February, Abd al Kadr Altaleh, an Israeli Arab also from Tayibe, was convicted of going to Syria and joining al Qaeda's Al Nusrah Front. Last September, press reportsand jihadists said that Mueid Juma'a, an Israeli Arab who fought with the Al Nusrah Front, had died fighting in Syria. In October, reports suggested that Juma'a may be alive, however.
The Shin Bet has warned on a number of occasions since the fighting began in Syria that authorities "fear they [Israeli Arabs] will be exploited by terrorists [in Syria], both as a source of information about targets in Israel, as well as for carrying out military operations against Israel."

Abu Sulayman al Muhajir, a high-ranking sharia official in the Al Nusrah Front, al Qaeda's official branch in Syria, has released a video explaining the group's ongoing conflict with the Islamic State of Iraq and the Sham (ISIS). Al Qaeda's general command disowned ISIS in early February after Abu Bakr al Baghdadi, the emir of ISIS, repeatedly disobeyed orders.
Sulayman was an extremist preacher in Australia until he relocated to Syria sometime last year to serve as a mediator in the intra-jihadist dispute. He recently joined several other jihadist ideologues in calling on Ayman al Zawahiri to issue a more detailed condemnation of ISIS.
While parts of Sulayman's video rehash old ground, including ISIS' unwillingness to settle its differences with other groups, the video also covers new areas. Sulayman offers a substantive discussion of al Qaeda's strategy and "hierarchy."
Al Qaeda's organization scheme and Baghdadi's insubordination
Sulayman says that the relationship between al Qaeda and ISIS was the same as "an emir with his [group]." According to Sulayman, the predecessor to ISIS, the Islamic State of Iraq (ISI), was a loyal branch of al Qaeda's international organization. Sulayman also says that Baghdadi had sworn bayat (an oath of allegiance) to Zawahiri, and he dismisses attempts by ISIS leaders to portray this oath as anything less than a "completely binding" pledge of obedience to al Qaeda's senior leaders.
Sulayman explains how Baghdadi and the Islamic State of Iraq (ISI), prior to its expansion into Syria, fit into al Qaeda's organizational scheme.
Al Qaeda "draws up its plans and its strategy based on what we call al Qalim, or locations," Sulayman says. And a leader is chosen to oversee each of these locations. For example, Nasir al Wuhayshi (the emir of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula and al Qaeda's overall general manager) is al Qaeda's representative in the Arabian Peninsula, and Abu Musab Abdul Wadud (the emir of al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb) oversees the Maghreb. The "same goes for each of the locations, or al Qalim," according to Sulayman, and Zawahiri is the emir above all of them.
The head of each location swears a bayat to al Qaeda "that binds them to the group" and means that they owe "allegiance in the matters of jihad," because the oath "ties them to one unity, one group called" al Qaeda.
Sulayman's interviewer, an English-speaking member of the Al Nusrah Front, asks if Zawahiri is "really the head of the hierarchy." Sulayman scoffs at suggestions to the contrary, saying "it's quite strange that there's all this confusion about this particular topic" and the administration of ISIS "knows very well the rank they had in" al Qaeda.
Continuing with his description of al Qaeda, Sulayman says there is "someone [who] overlooks all of these different locations," called Masul al Qalim. The locations al Qaeda chooses are not based on Western boundaries, such as those drawn up by the Sykes-Picot agreement, Sulayman explains. Instead, "it is a purely strategic decision based on Islamic principles and goes in line with these Islamic guidelines," as "has been the policy of al Qaeda since its establishment."
This is intended as a direct rebuttal to ISIS' claims that al Qaeda adhered to Western boundaries when it ordered the group to leave the jihad in Syria and return to Iraq.
Baghdadi was named the al Qalim of Iraq, Sulayman says, but he did not have the authority to establish an Islamic state beyond its borders. Each leader of one of al Qaeda's locations, or al Qalim, has a "certain authority." But announcing the creation of an Islamic state "is not one of" the authorities each leader has.
Sulayman points to Shabaab ("our brothers"), al Qaeda's official branch in Somalia, and says that they "never established a State," nor did they announce a merger "with their neighbors in Yemen," because "they don't have such authority." They "must go back" to the al Qaeda "hierarchy to receive such permission."
Sulayman says that Shabaab did not merge with AQAP even though this "would be much, much easier than the" attempt by ISIS to do the same. Here, Sulayman is likely referring to the rumors that surfaced online saying that the ISIS was going to merge with AQAP. No such merger has taken place. ISIS has also been attempting to collect its own pledges of bayat to Baghdadi, but few have been forthcoming thus far. Sulayman says that al Qaeda's "hierarchy is precisely why we don't see [leaders] from different areas giving bayat to Sheikh al Baghdadi." The emir in each location swears bayat directly to Zawahiri.
Al Qaeda's "first mediator"
During his time in Australia, Sulayman was known as an extremist preacher, but he was not publicly identified as an al Qaeda member. His latest video suggests that he has long played a role in the organization. Sulayman says he was the "first mediator" between ISIS and Al Nusrah. It is unlikely that this position would be given to anyone other than a trusted member of al Qaeda. Sulayman adds that he served in this role alongside an "Iraqi brother" whose name is not mentioned "for security reasons."
To date, all of al Qaeda's mediation efforts, including those spearheaded by Sulayman, have failed. But Sulayman argues that the Al Nusrah Front was willing to compromise in pursuit of a resolution. Abu Muhammad al Julani, the head of Al Nusrah, was even willing to work alongside Baghdadi and ISIS under the banner of al Qaeda in Syria. But this would have required the annulment of ISIS, something Baghdadi would not agree to.
Earlier this year, Julani issued an ultimatum to ISIS that would have expanded the infighting between the groups if ISIS did not agree to Julani's demands. Julani backed down, however, and Sulayman explains why. Sulayman says that Al Nusrah abides by the "scholarly opinions and the rulings given by the sheikhs who are well-grounded in Islamic sciences and are known for their Islamic positions," such as Abu Qatada, Abu Muhammad al Maqdisi, and Sheikh Sulayman al Alwan. Two of these three clerics advised Al Nusrah "not to widen this battle and conflict" with ISIS, so Al Nusrah is responding "as necessary, and only in the areas where [ISIS'] transgression is clear."
Qatada and Maqdisi are both imprisoned in Jordan, but have been been actively commenting on the dispute between Al Nusrah and ISIS. The two clerics have been highly critical of ISIS, and have been publicly advising Al Nusrah on how to handle the ongoing dispute.
Even after months of infighting and heated arguments, al Qaeda still wants ISIS to submit to a common sharia (Islamic law) court to settle its disagreements with other groups. Sulayman says that while ISIS has "clearly caused the biggest rift in the global jihad" since the fall of the Caliphate in 1924, Al Nusrah will answer ISIS' transgressions only "until they come back to the truth" and "are willing to succumb to an Islamic court wherein they are not the judge and prosecutor."
"I'm sure that there are many good brothers, good-hearted, sincere brothers in" ISIS, Sulayman says. Al Qaeda still wants the infighting to end, according to Sulayman, but ISIS will not oblige.
