TRIBUTE TO GREEK ISLANDS. SIFNOS

 The island is a medium sized island in the western Cyclades. It lies about 130 kilometers or 80 nautical miles from Piraeus. Has an area of ​​73.2 square kilometers, 15 kilometers long and 7.5 kilometers wide.The coastline is about 70 km and has a permanent population of about2000 inhabitants.
 The island is traversed by four parallel mountain ranges with peaks of the main Prophet Ilias (682 m), center, and St. Simeon (463 m) to the north. Headlands of the island are: St. Philip (NW), the AKP. Napo (A.),and Acre. Short (L.). Around the island there are the following bays:Bay St. George (NW) Kamares (D.) and Platygiali (L.). South of the island is the small islet Kitriani.
The soil of the island consists of granite rocks, argillaceous sandstoneand slate stone, limestone, etc. It contains minerals like iron ore, copper, lead, manganese, galena, magnesium, etc. In antiquity andcontained gold and silver mines and quarries "Sifnaiou Stone" of which were made famous tableware such as "Sifnos glasses."
 Generally the climate of the island is temperate and healthy, as all of the Cyclades, and the ground is quite fertile. Main products are cereals, oil, wine, legumes, fruits, cotton textiles, pottery and poultry and livestock products.
 Administratively Sifnos Milos belongs to the province, sacred to the Metropolis of Syros, Tinos, Andros, Kea island. Formerly consisted oftwo communities, Apollonia (of 10 villages) and Artemonas (with 5villages) who formed a council.
The villages of the island are: Apollonia (Capital), Upper Pedal,Exambela, Castle, Lower pedal Katavati and Artemonas. Beaches ofthe Arches (port), Deep, Light, Beans, Seralia, Apokofto, Platis Yialosand Vourlidia Cheronisos.
The main sights include the Venetian Kastro village, the Prophet Eliastall, San Simeon (overlooking Kamares) and too many churches.
The island has a long tradition of cooking and is the birthplace of NikosTselemendes.

 The national chef, Nick Tselementes comes from Sifnos. This has given the island a culinary culture, which, although not directlyidentified with Tselemendes has created an appetite for culinaryquality.
It is telling that every year in September held in Sifnos CycladesTselemendes gastronomy festivals. Similarly, the widespread use ofpottery produced in Sifnos has two famous recipes made in clay pots, respectively. The first is the mastelo which took its name from thenamesake dish which is cooked and the second is the chickpea soup.Other than those traditionally Sifnian foods are: capersalad.The, chickpea, honey pies, macaroons, pastels.
Important role in the life of the island and has had angioplasty. The development of pottery contributed the geology of the island, because the rich clay soil was of excellent raw material. The story goes backseveral centuries back, but the greater prosperity of the penultimatecentury knew where Sifnos potters were exporting their productsacross the country. Over the years of Sifnos potters settled in many parts of Greece, Cyclades, Chios, Crete, the islands of the Saronic Gulf, carrying their art. In the area of Maroussi in Athens created manyworkshops and neighborhood. The potteries are installed after the eradication of piracy on the beaches, thus facilitating the safe transportation of the boats.
On the island today are a lot of pottery, which continues the tradition, construct traditional utilitarian pottery and decorative art.
